G2 Esports is currently one of the most dominant and successful teams in the world of competitive Counter-Strike. They have had a few rocky years in recent history, with many roster changes and unstable performances in the big stages. But G2 seem to have finally found their footing with their current roster. In this article, we will take a look at G2's journey through IEM Katowice and the events that led up to their victory.

Group Stages:

Making it directly into the Group Stages, G2 were already being touted as one of the favorites of the tournament. They had put up a stellar performance in Blast World Finals 2022. However, no one was ready for the masterclass that they were about to show the world. Not dropping a single map in the Group Stages, they coasted through with ease to the playoffs.

Against BIG, they managed a comeback, and stomped them into the lower brackets. They had a very dominant series against other tournament favorites in Faze, who had won in Katowice in 2022. NaVi was a similar story, as G2 always had the upper hand in the series. The Ukrainian outfit were left scrambling for answers.

And it was not a single man carry situation either. Each of the G2 members stepped up when it was needed most. Jks had fantastic games against BIG and Faze, getting back-to-back match MVPs. It was m0NESY who got the best of NaVi, with 42 kills, and matching s1mple’s total kills of 28 just with the AWP.

Semi-Finals:

Making their way straight into the Semi-finals, it was a similar run of dominance for G2. even though Team Liquid had managed to put up spectacular performances to get this far, it was not enough against the powerhouse of huNter, who dropped a monstrous 49 kills, along with an Ace, to win it all the way.

Grand Finals:

Heroic were the only team who were able to steal a map from G2. But even then, this wasn’t enough to put a halt to their commanding form. Although Heroic had the lead in both Nuke and Mirage, G2, with their amazing teamwork, pulled off both comebacks to get the  2 map lead. Heroic stole back Inferno, the only time G2 lost on this map in the tournament. But this wasn’t enough to build momentum for Heroic, as G2 bounced right back and won Ancient in commanding fashion at 16-7. It was huNter again at the top of the table with 82 kills in the series, followed closely by the Aussie jks at 80.

G2 overall stats for IEM Katowice 2023

G2 had an 83% win rate on their Map picks, only dropping 1 out of 6. And they had a total win rate of 91%. This Grand Finals also adds to G2’s tally of 12 match win streak. They dropped only 2 maps in the streak.

IEM Katowice 2023 was a fitting end to G2 Esports' incredible journey. The team's victory was a testament to their talent, determination, and teamwork, and a memorable moment in the history of competitive CS:GO.

Another Early Exit, Same Old Story: Team Falcons Are Running Out Of Excuses

There is a cruel irony at the heart of Team Falcons' CS2 project. Hand someone from 2022 their current roster sheet — NiKo, m0NESY, TeSeS, Kyxsan, kyosuke, all under the tutelage of five-time Major-winning coach Zonic — and they would confidently declare this team the undisputed best in the world. And yet, here we are in March 2026, watching Falcons get knocked out of BLAST Open Spring in the quarterfinals by PARIVISION.
