In the VCT Pacific Week 2, GenG took on DFM in a best of three map series. In the end of an intense battle, GenG took down DFM 2-1. After the long battle, Strafe had an opportunity to interview GenG’s Lee “k1ng” Seung-Won. In an exclusive 1-on-1 interview, k1ng talks about being the backbone of GenG, the mistakes made by the team and more.

Q. Congratulations on your win. Can you reflect on the game?

GenG k1ng: “I think on map one we communicated fairly well. So we could focus pretty well as well. But by the time we got on the second and third map, it was really late here in Korea, so we lost a lot of concentration, especially on map two. So we lost the map.“

Q. GenG looks especially strong on Attack but seem to struggle on defense at times, why is it so?

GenG k1ng: “While it is helpful to have some strats planned on defense as well, the most crucial thing on defense is communication and aim. As I mentioned before, our concentration and communication fell down starting map two and that's why we struggled on defense.

Q. How has it been adjusting with the team?

GenG k1ng: “I have played with TS and GoDdead in the past. Everyone on our team has great potential so I am not worried about them. I just wish everyone would continue to grow in their own ways.”

Q. You and TS are currently the backbone of GenG. Can you elaborate on your role?

GenG k1ng: “I think I am fine playing this role. Sometimes if a teammate makes a mistake it can be frustrating. Sometimes TS and I can get it done even when our teammates make a mistake but that’s not always the case. And that can be frustrating, but when we are on the stage we are a team no matter what so I just try to support all my teammates mentally and ensure everyone is in the right headspace while playing the game”

Q. How do you maintain your composure in critical situations, especially in clutches and anchoring situations?

GenG k1ng: “I think what’s most important is to keep looking at the mini map and to keep looking for who’s closest to you and how far away they are. Because if my teammate and rest of my team is too far away then I will just say you know what I will just leave the site. Because it's way better to make the decision to leave the site than trying to contest halfway. so I think the most important thing is to keep an eye on the minimap.”

Q. What are your thoughts on Gekko?

GenG k1ng: “I think his kit is good. But I think he works better in theory than practice. So unless there is a team that emerges and happens to be a really great Gekko team. I think he’d be a trap in my opinion.”

Q. Team Secret has been on a really good run, what are your thoughts on the team?

GenG k1ng: “So I think Team Secret is a strong team. They have done really well with rebuilding their team. They are a very precise and meticulous team. Their younger players are strong mechanically while their older players provide that central backbone with a lot of experience. They are a team that has very few holes So we have to prepare accordingly for them. So we have to prepare really well for them.”

GenG will face Team Secret in the VCT Pacific W3. Both teams are currently undefeated and a win will solidify the team’s position in the League. Both teams will come prepared and the team making the least mistakes will take the dub.

The VCT Pacific action resumed on April 8th. The three-day action will see the scoreboard shift significantly, with only three teams staying unscathed.
