North American organization NRG has fallen in the quarterfinals of Worlds 2023. Despite the historic making of top 8, NRG failed to secure a deeper run after falling to the LPL’s 4th seed, Weibo Gaming. The latter has now secured top 4 at Worlds 2023 and a spot in the semifinals after clean sweeping NRG 3-0 today.

What Went Wrong for NRG?

Game 1 started out fairly even. NRG had been allowed their pocket strat of Senna + Tahm Kench in the bot lane. This led to an oppressive laning phase, and an extremely strong front-to-back siege composition with good poke from the Senna especially when chasing.

This was also the longest of the three games, as both teams were fairly even for most of the game. What ultimately led to Weibo managing to close out Game 1 was the incredible team-fighting prowess, especially from Li Xiaohu Yuan-Hao on the Neeko and Kang TheShy Seung-lok on the K’Sante. Strong turns and engages ripped NRG’s careful composition apart before they could get into positions.

By Game 2, NRG elected to completely shift their game plan into a full-dive composition. They selected champions such as Kai’Sa, Vi, and Alistar. Unfortunately, they never got to get it off the ground, as the Aphelios from Wang LightGuang-yu got fed early, and shut them out. Moreover, “TheShy” pulled out the Aatrox pick as well to counter K’Sante, leading to some exciting battles in the top lane and flanks during the mid-game.

In the final game of the series, NRG had gone back to the board, going for a pick-heavy comp. With Sejuani, Rumble, and Yone, NRG was looking fairly desperate for a miracle snowball game. Sadly for them, Weibo kept their cool, and utilized their own poke composition extremely well. “Xiaohu” personally had his best game of Worlds 2023 thus far, going massive on the Jayce to shut down NRG’s hopes.

Bright Spot for NRG

Having achieved the deepest run so far in the organization’s history, NRG can safely say they have made NA proud. Moreover, their run and success internationally has done more to reignite hope in the region than other teams at previous international events due to having notched victories against Europe AND made top 8.

Strategic Silence by Weibo

Due to the larger difference in team-fighting experience, Weibo was able to leverage that into a clean three game series. During the games, they barely adjusted their composition, defaulting in Games 1 and 2 to similar comps (only one champion was different between the two). Moreover, Game 3’s biggest surprise was the Heimerdinger, not a massive game changer to reveal it now.

Conclusion

The conclusion of NRG’s Worlds 2023 journey is a bittersweet one. While they managed to make top 8 and the Knockout Stage (both massive achievements for the LCS and NA), their failure to make it any deeper is symptomatic of the region’s weakness. The biggest bright spot for NA however, is NRG’s success at this Worlds, has the massive potential to reignite passions and hope in the declining region.
