Following the news of the exciting introduction of themed seasons to League of Legends in 2025, Riot Games is gearing up to make the coming year a transformative one for the game, introducing a host of different updates that promise to redefine the player experience.

From the launch of an innovative new game mode to big changes to the Ranked system and revamped approaches to Battle Passes and rewards, these changes aim to make the game more accessible, engaging, and rewarding for players of all skill levels.

Whether you’re a competitive grinder, a casual evening player, or someone looking to dive back into the game, 2025’s updates ensure there’s something for everyone. Here's a closer look at the exciting changes Riot has planned.

New game mode: Swiftplay

A brand new game mode will be coming to League of Legends in 2025, Swiftplay, designed to deliver the core Summoner’s Rift experience in a faster and more accessible format. Swiftplay will focus on ensuring that all 10 players can enjoy their champion’s abilities, lane, teamfight, and scale effectively, regardless of early-game disadvantages.

While traditional elements like farming, snowballing, and objectives will remain important, the mode promises to be less punishing, allowing players to contribute to their team’s success even if the early game doesn’t go their way.

Unlike ARAM or other casual modes, Swiftplay retains a competitive edge, but with a more relaxed emphasis on personal performance and more focus on champion development. Whether you are playing with friends, winding down after work, or learning the game, Riot envisions this as a mode for players seeking a lower-stakes, authentic League experience.

Swiftplay features:

  • Gain more gold and experience as the game progresses
  • Players who fall behind will earn more gold and experience
  • Players who fall behind will be worth less gold
  • Accelerated timers for neutral objectives
  • Supports will earn more gold than in Summoner's Rift

When is Swiftplay coming to League of Legends?

Swiftplay will initially become available during Act I of Season 1 in 2025 across the regions of North America, Latin America North, Latin America South, EU West, EU Nordic & East, Russia, Brazil, Turkey, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Once it goes live, Swiftplay will replace Quickplay in all of these regions.

If you would like to test out League of Legends' new game mode sooner than that, however, you can do so on the PBE starting December 11th, 2024.

Battle Passes and Rewards overhaul for 2025

"Over the years these systems have become needlessly complex."

Now, for League of Legends in 2025, there will always be a Battle Pass active, featuring both free and paid alternatives and paths. The price for these Battle Passes paid tracks will be the same as that of an Event Pass in 2024. That is to say, 1,650 RP.

Moreover, Event tokens and shop will be removed altogether. Instead, you will receive your rewards as you progress through the Battle Pass tracks.

Two Battle Passes will become available for every Season of League of Legends in 2025. The Passes will, naturally, be strongly tied to the given Season's theme. So, expect Noxus-related Battle Passes coming your way to start off the new year in League of Legends. The total number of Battle Passes per year will remain the same at six annual Passes. Instead, each Battle Pass will have a longer duration to ensure you always have a Pass active at any given point.

Furthermore, systems like Honor and Champion Mastery will feed directly to the Battle Passes. This means that, for instance, having a higher Honor level will earn you more experience as you move through the Passes tracks.

Ultimately, you will be able to earn up to twelve skins per year with the free tracks from Battle Passes in 2025. At least six of these skins will be guaranteed to be related to the theme of the Season during which they were unlocked.

League of Legends promises a simpler, cleaner look at Battle Passes and the way you go about unlocking rewards in 2025, making progression a more rewarding experience than ever before.

Major Changes Coming to Ranked in League of Legends for 2025

Riot Games has announced significant updates to Ranked gameplay in 2025, addressing community feedback and refining the competitive experience.

One major change is the shift to a single annual Ranked reset, eliminating the mid-year resets that caused player fatigue and rank volatility. Two Ranked resets a year were simply too disruptive for most of the game's playerbase. Riot, it seems, has listened.

Additionally, earning Victorious skins will now require players to win 15 Ranked games per thematic season, while still retaining the Gold requirement.

After promising to keep a close look on potentially problematic topics like Ranked inflation or alt accounts, the proposed changes demonstrate Riot's commitment to a fairer, more rewarding Ranked experience in the coming year.
