How League of Legends (LOL) Matches Work

League of Legends matches are played with two teams of five summoners who battle to destroy the enemy's Nexus. Each player controls his or her champion who has unique abilities and attributes that can be controlled. The match is then played in early-game, mid-game, and late-game segments, which can range from 25-45 minutes long. The teams select champions based on game strategy including countering what the opponent chooses and finding champion synergies together. Players utilize communication, collective gameplay, and objective control through the match to achieve victory. League of Legends matches in professional play are played in a 'best-of' series format, and player stats that are tracked include kills, gold, objectives, and vision. The outcome of each game will result in a change for whatever region the teams or players are from in the standings, playoff seeding, or for qualification in international tournaments.
