Xin Zhao is a melee fighter known for strong early pressure, reliable crowd control, and high sustain. He excels at starting fights, isolating priority targets, and forcing skirmishes.

Once a gladiator in Noxus, Xin Zhao survived countless battles in the fighting pits. After Demacian forces freed him, he pledged loyalty to the Lightshield dynasty. He now serves Demacia with discipline and direct force.

This guide explains Xin Zhao’s abilities, combos, item paths, jungle approach, and counterplay.

Xin Zhao’s Abilities Explained

Xin Zhao’s kit focuses on repeated basic attacks, cooldown reduction, and target isolation. Timing and positioning are key.

Determination (Passive)

Determination empowers every third attack or Wind Becomes Lightning strike. Xin Zhao gains a stack on each hit, up to three. On the third stack, he deals bonus physical damage and heals based on a percentage of his maximum health.

This passive gives strong lane sustain and safe jungle clears. The heal allows him to trade more often than many melee champions.

The bonus damage does not critically strike. When triggered by basic attacks, it benefits from life steal. When triggered by Wind Becomes Lightning, it does not apply life steal in the same way.

Spirit Visage increases the healing significantly due to how the life gain interacts with healing modifiers.

Three Talon Strike (Q)

Three Talon Strike empowers Xin Zhao’s next three basic attacks. Each strike deals bonus physical damage and reduces his other cooldowns by one second.

The third attack knocks the target up for 0.75 seconds. This knock-up is central to his early ganks and trades.

Three Talon Strike resets the auto attack timer. A common trade pattern is auto attack first, then activate Q to increase damage output. Attack speed items allow him to reach the third strike faster.

Wind Becomes Lightning (W)

Wind Becomes Lightning has two parts: a slash and a thrust.

The slash hits in a cone. After a short delay, Xin Zhao thrusts forward in a line. The thrust deals higher damage and slows enemies by 50 percent for 1.5 seconds.

Champions and monsters hit are marked as Challenged and revealed. The ability scales with attack damage and ability power. The thrust also deals increased damage based on critical strike chance.

Wind Becomes Lightning heals Xin Zhao for a portion of his life steal. This adds sustain in extended fights.

Audacious Charge (E)

Audacious Charge is Xin Zhao’s gap closer. He dashes to a target enemy, dealing magic damage to nearby enemies and slowing them briefly.

After the dash, he gains bonus attack speed for five seconds. This attack speed boosts his passive and Three Talon Strike damage.

The ability has extended range against Challenged targets. It can also be used creatively to dash to minions for escapes or repositioning.

Crescent Guard (R)

Crescent Guard sweeps around Xin Zhao, dealing physical damage that includes a percentage of the target’s current health.

All non-Challenged enemies hit are knocked back and stunned. The last enemy champion Xin Zhao attacked or dashed to becomes Challenged and will not be knocked away.

For four seconds after casting, Xin Zhao becomes invulnerable to enemy champions who are outside the circle around him. This makes the ability powerful against ranged damage.

Positioning determines the value of Crescent Guard. Proper use isolates a key target while pushing others away.

Core Combos and Trading Patterns

Xin Zhao relies on simple but precise combos.

A standard engage starts with Audacious Charge. This closes distance and applies a slow. Immediately follow with Three Talon Strike and basic attacks to trigger the knock-up.

Wind Becomes Lightning fits into this combo to add damage and apply the Challenge mark if needed.

For stronger isolation, auto attack a priority target first to apply Challenge. Then use Crescent Guard to knock back everyone else while keeping the marked target close.

When trading in lane, use the first two strikes of Three Talon Strike on minions. Save the third strike. When the opponent steps forward, dash in and trigger the knock-up.

Do not stack all crowd control at once during ganks. Space out the knock-up and ultimate knockback to extend control.

Jungle Pathing and Early Game Plan

Xin Zhao has safe early clears thanks to Determination. He can clear camps while staying near full health.

Starting at Blue Sentinel gives strong mana sustain and prepares him for a level three gank. Starting at Red Brambleback gives extra damage and a slow for early pressure.

Level three is a strong timing window. With access to Q, W, and E, he can force flashes or secure kills in top or mid lane.

If no gank is available at level three, recalling to complete jungle items can prevent falling behind in experience.

When ganking, approach from behind rather than from the side. This forces the enemy to run through Xin Zhao, allowing him to save Audacious Charge for after their escape ability.

Itemization for Xin Zhao

the-complete-league-of-legends-xin-zhao-playbook

Xin Zhao scales best with attack damage and attack speed. He benefits from cooldown reduction due to the flat cooldown reduction on Three Talon Strike.

Strong item choices include:

  • Blade of the Ruined King for on-hit damage and sustain

  • Trinity Force for attack speed, movement speed, and Sheen synergy

  • The Black Cleaver for armor reduction and cooldown reduction

  • Spirit Visage to amplify healing from Determination

  • Wit's End for magic resistance and on-hit damage

  • Frozen Mallet for added health and sticking power

Jungle enchantments depend on team needs. Warrior increases early damage. Bloodrazor helps against high-health targets.

Attack speed items increase the frequency of passive procs and knock-ups.

AP Xin Zhao Option

Xin Zhao also has ability power ratios on Determination, Wind Becomes Lightning, Audacious Charge, and Crescent Guard.

With enough ability power, his third-hit heal becomes significant. Nashor’s Tooth and Guinsoo’s Rageblade increase on-hit frequency, which works well with his passive.

Lich Bane adds burst after using abilities. This build offers strong sustain but requires some defensive items due to his melee nature.

Teamfighting with Xin Zhao

Xin Zhao works best as an initiator or diver.

Engage with Audacious Charge onto a priority target. Apply Challenge, then cast Crescent Guard to knock away other enemies. This creates a temporary duel.

His ultimate also protects him from ranged damage outside the circle. This allows him to survive longer in the center of fights.

Position carefully before using Crescent Guard. If the wrong target is marked, the knockback may fail to isolate the intended enemy.

How to Play Against Xin Zhao

the-complete-league-of-legends-xin-zhao-playbook

Xin Zhao struggles against kiting when Audacious Charge is on cooldown. Ranged champions should keep distance and use slows or crowd control.

Armor reduces much of his damage since most of it is physical. Attack speed reduction items like Frozen Heart weaken his damage output.

Grievous Wounds effects reduce his healing from Determination. Thornmail is effective for this reason.

Avoid clumping together before he uses Crescent Guard. Spread out to reduce the impact of his knockback and percent health damage.

Harass him when he goes for minion last hits. He is melee and must step forward to farm.

Advanced Tips and Mechanics

Audacious Charge can target minions near an enemy to apply area slow without marking the main target. This allows Crescent Guard to knock that champion back.

Crescent Guard can also be used defensively to knock enemies away during escapes. Make sure the pursuer is not marked as Challenged first.

Xin Zhao clears safely but not extremely fast. Invading him can be risky due to his strong early dueling.

Flash can reposition him behind an enemy during a fight. This can slightly improve damage output due to his fast attack animations.

Final Thoughts on Xin Zhao

Xin Zhao rewards direct play and strong timing. He excels in early skirmishes, tower pressure, and isolating key targets.

Players who manage his cooldowns, passive stacks, and Challenge mark gain consistent results. Clean engages and proper positioning define his success.

Mastering Xin Zhao means understanding when to commit and when to disengage. When used with control and patience, he becomes a reliable front-line threat for any team.
