Riot Games has finally officially introduced the League of Legends Hall of Legends.

Set to begin by inducting its first inductee in 2024, Riot has yet to unveil many of the pressing details thus far for this new, exciting concept. A form of recognition for some of League of Legends greatest players over the near decade-and-a-half since the game’s inception, the newly christened Hall of Legends is set to launch in 2024 and introduce its first member.

In their recent ‘State of the Game 2024’, Riot underlined that the basis for any inductee’s introduction would be their “measured lasting impact [the player] left on the game, the sport, and the community.”

A Panel To be Formed: Experts Gather

Riot also confirmed that in an effort to properly induct members that fit the outlined criteria, there would be a gathering of an independent voting panel, comprised of esports industry veterans and experts from every region. Inductees each year will have their historic careers celebrated both in real life and in-game.

Speculations on the First

Whenever a new concept such as this is to be introduced, perhaps the most important, defining choice comes in the first choice. That first inductee has the potential to set the bar, standard, and lasting legacy for all those to come. Thus, the name Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok has been floated around more than any other. The undisputed Greatest-of-All-Time League of Legends player, Faker has accomplished more, won more titles – domestically and internationally – than any other League of Legends player.

Most recently, he added a fourth Worlds title to his résumé, further expanding the divide between him and every other player. His blend of humility, staggering list of accomplishments, and standard of professionalism he has set for the scene in his over decade-long career in esports is considered by many the gold standard. Therefore, many anticipate his induction to be unquestionable.

The question comes rather, should he be the first?

Despite being the greatest, there have been a multitude of other names in the League of Legends scene that have helped define the game into what it has now become, carving their own piece of legacy in the long tapestry of esports history.

Other names such as Søren "Bjergsen" Bjerg and Yiliang "Doublelift" Peng helped forged North American League of Legends into the veritable dynasty and ultra popular product it was in the early years of competition.

Hong "MadLife" Min-gi and Cho "Mata" Se-hyeong are among hallowed names that redefined the role of Support, and to an extent, League of Legends as a whole. Many other names come to mind who rightfully should also decorate this new hall. Hence, Riot has a monumental task ahead of themsevles, and over a decade of professional excellence to celebrate.
