If you're just starting out on your League of Legends journey, you may be unaware of some counterintuitive pitfalls that can set back your progress or even prevent success entirely. Read on to find out about five common mistakes that new players make and how to avoid them!

Not Utilizing Minions to Push Lanes.

One of the biggest mistakes that beginners make in League of Legends is not properly leveraging minions to push lanes. Minions are small, expendable creatures that spawn throughout each game and can be used to deal damage enemies and turrets. Not taking advantage of minion waves can result in a lack of communication, movement, and lane pushing, hurting your ability to win games!

Poor Positioning in Team Fights.

Poor positioning during team fights is a common mistake that players make in League of Legends. If your champion is too far away from the fight they’re unable to deal damage and support their allies. Similarly, squad members should always stand close enough together so that they can protect each other and capitalize on any opportunities given to them by enemies. Positioning is key to winning team fights!

Not Using Summoner Spells Effectively.

Summoner Spells can provide huge advantages and turn the tide of battle if used correctly. When choosing your spells remember to pick ones that compliment your champion and will benefit you in combat. Ignite is great for champions with strong early-game presence, while Teleport can give you an edge when it comes to map control. Not using or properly utilizing summoner spells can prove costly as they can be crucial in clutch fights!

Ignoring Itemization Improvements For Your Favorite Champions.

Often times players become accustomed to using certain items with the same champion over and over again, especially after a string of victories. However, this may not always be optimal in all scenarios. Pay attention to itemization changes or suggestions made by professional players. You may find that a new combination of items or even just one or two new items can greatly increase your chances of success and effectiveness on the battlefield!

Lack of Communication With Teammates During Gameplay.

One of the most common and avoidable mistakes players make during a game is failing to communicate with their teammates. Not only can communication facilitate team strategies and coordination, but it also can help create an overall environment of cooperation, which is key for success in the game. When playing, be sure to call out objectives, gank opportunities and any other important information that may assist your team. Utilizing voice chat or quick messaging can go a long way towards increasing your odds of winning!
