Is Bitdefender VPN safe?

Bitdefender VPN was developed by the same team behind one the world’s most trusted antivirus software, so it’s not beyond the imagination to assume that its VPN solution is rock solid, too. And in some ways that’s true, with a small handful of powerful security protocols in place to protect your data and privacy.

With that being said, let’s take a closer look at some of the features that Bitdefender uses to protect your online network.

Military-grade encryption

Yes, as you’d expect, Bitdefender has gone all in on how it encrypts its VPN network, with 256-bit encryption backed up by the military-grade RSA algorithm. This makes their VPN infrastructure absolutely impenetrable, so you should have no worries about maintaining a secure connection when using the Bitdefender VPN service.

Anti-tracker

The Bitdefender VPN brings a nice anti-tracker tool to the mix, which is ideal for ensuring that your web activity remains hidden from individuals and companies looking to collect and share your data.

The anti-tracker tool prevents sites from accessing lots of different information about you, including your location, your recent search history, preferences, and the device you’re using. Not all VPNs have this feature, so it’s something that may appeal to those who see security as their top priority when using a VPN.

Autoconnect VPN

One feature we particularly like about Bitdefender VPN – and one you’re unlikely to find on comparable VPN services – is ‘Autoconnect’. This useful feature automatically connects you to the Bitdefender VPN network in certain scenarios, so you don’t need to remember to switch it on each time you need to use it.

Situations in which Autoconnect kicks in include when you’re accessing unsecured public wifi, or when using peer-to-peer apps. It’s an awesome feature that could help you avoid nasty surprises, while giving peace of mind that you’re always protected and anonymous.

Internet kill switch

Like most of the best VPN services out there, Bitdefender features a kill switch function that automatically disables your internet connection when a DNS leak is detected on the network. This may be a standard feature on most VPNs, but the fact that you can toggle the Bitdefender kill switch on and off may be useful in some circumstances when you’re keen for your connection not to drop temporarily while using a VPN.

Does Bitdefender VPN log your data?

Although on the whole Bitdefender does a good job of keeping its users safe, one slight concern some of its customers have raised concerns data logging. This is when a VPN provider keeps a record of a user’s browsing history and network activity, with the potential for this information to pass on or be shared with third parties – putting a user’s safety and privacy at risk.

There have been historic instances of data logging through Bitdefender VPN, which may be a major red flag for some users. However, you should rest assured that the company does now have a zero-logging policy and this, coupled with its superb range of rock-solid safety features, should be enough to bring peace of mind that this is a trustworthy service.

How much does Bitdefender VPN cost?

Bitdefender VPN is a reasonably priced VPN service – it’s not the cheapest but nor is it the priciest. For this reason, it’s difficult to compare it to other services, seeing as it comes in at a very similar price point.

With that being said, there are a couple of things to note about Bitdefender’s pricing. First, there are two tiers to choose from depending on whether you plan to pay monthly or yearly. There are decent savings to be had if you choose to pay in one lump sum, though this is a similar incentive to other VPN services out there.

Here’s how the two Bitdefender VPN pricing tiers work.

Subscription length Price
One-year subscription $2.50/month
Rolling monthly subscription $6.99/month

The next thing to note about Bitdefender VPN pricing is that after one year, the price you pay will increase. This might sound counterintuitive given that you’ve shown loyalty for one year, but Bitdefender makes clear that the $29.99 annual fee is an introductory deal for new customers only. After that, you’ll be paying $49.99 a year, so the difference between the one-year subscription and the rolling monthly plan becomes much smaller.

Lastly, it’s worth noting that new customers can try all the premium features of Bitdefender VPN with a 7-day free trial. That does include a fair usage policy of ten unique VPN network connections, but that should be more than enough time to figure out if this particular service is for you.

Is there a free version of Bitdefender VPN?

We hesitate to say yes here but, technically, yes, Bitdefender VPN does offer a free plan. This does, however, come with some huge caveats.

For starters, Bitdefender VPN has a maximum usage cap of 200 MB per day on its free plan; that’s just about enough to surf a few web pages when connected to your VPN server of choice. Don’t expect to be streaming content or downloading huge files – this just can’t happen without paying for a premium Bitdefender plan.

What’s more, free users will find some features missing from the Bitdefender backend, including the neat anti-tracker and adblocker tools that won us over in an earlier section. Omitting features is quite typical of VPN operators, though, so we won’t judge Bitdefender too harshly.

Indeed, the fact that Bitdefender VPN offers a free-for-life version is quite a boon in and of itself. For a trusted organization of this scale to offer a free version of its software is remarkable, even if it is heavily restricted.

And if you only plan to use a VPN for light use – say for work or study – we think the free service is definitely worth a look. Aside from a couple of missing features and the data cap, there are no other restrictions that we can see, so it could be just what you’ve been looking for.

How do I sign up for Bitdefender VPN?

If after reading enough Bitdefender VPN reviews you’ve decided that this is the right VPN platform for you, the next step is to pick a plan and sign up for an account. Happily, this is much simpler than the task of settling on a VPN service, and before you know it, you’ll be set up and ready to connect to your preferred VPN servers.

So, how exactly do you get started with Bitdefender VPN? Our experts are here to guide you through the process step by step.

  1. Visit Bitdefender and navigate to the solutions page, where you’ll find the VPN option.
  2. On the primary Bitdefender VPN portal page, tap the ‘Get Bitdefender Premium VPN’ button.
  3. Proceed through the steps to check out, creating an account and adding your payment details.
  4. When that’s all done, you’ll need to download the Bitdefender app onto all your devices (up to 10 per plan). If you already have Bitdefender antivirus protection, it’s possible to sync your new VPN plan with the existing solution.
  5. Once you have the app installed, you can now enjoy access to Bitdefender Central, the VPN’s main server network database. From here, it’s easy to navigate to the servers you want to connect to around the world.

How big is the Bitdefender VPN server network?

No Bitdefender VPN review would be complete without looking at the brand’s server network. After all, this ultimately dictates how fast and reliable your VPN experience will be, as well as the locations that you’ll be able to route your internet traffic in and out of.

In terms of server network size, then, we’re pleased to report that Bitdefender more than holds its own. Considering this is only classed as a mid-range VPN solution, the global clout of the Bitdefender name certainly shines through here – with a huge network of over 4,000 servers in 53 countries around the world.

Can you stream movies and TV shows on Bitdefender VPN?

Lots of people reading this Bitdefender VPN review will want to know if the service is any good for streaming movies and TV shows. After all, streaming and accessing content from other countries and jurisdictions is a priority for many VPN users.

Although we’d hesitate to say that streaming is a Bitdefender VPN’s forte, the platform does hold its own so far as the most mainstream streaming sites are concerned. For instance, in our Bitdefender tests, we were able to access sites like BBC iPlayer and Netflix without any trouble. So if you plan to use this VPN for regular, day-to-day viewing on popular streamers, you should be able to enjoy a hassle-free experience.

Where Bitdefender VPN does stumble a little, though, is when it comes to streaming content from lesser-known platforms. So, if you’re hoping to view overseas videos and content on niche streaming services, you may be better off looking elsewhere, as Bitdefender can struggle to connect to some websites.

What are the best alternatives to Bitdefender VPN?

While Bitdefender VPN certainly has its merits – particularly from a security perspective – it isn’t without its drawbacks. Of course, this is true for all VPN operators, so the key is to find the platform that delivers the least compromises based on your individual VPN requirements.

With this in mind, how does Bitdefender compare to other streaming sites out there? The reference table below offers a glimpse at what other services are available and how they differ.

Conclusion – Is Bitdefender VPN good? It’s excellent

But putting these slight niggles to one side, we have to conclude that this is an excellent mid-range VPN solution that offers some terrific security features and network connectivity.
