Alliance had high hopes ahead of the 2023 Dota Pro Circuit. The organization signed a few strong players who were willing to join despite the fact that their Dota 2 team was playing in Division II of Western Europe.

One of these players is Gustav “s4” Magnusson, who is a former TI champion with Alliance. Now, aged 30, he wanted to compete for his former team again, for the 4th time in his career.

Alliance was so confident that it could succeed that it even started a second Dota 2 team, in South America, called Alliance.LATAM. But in that region, things did not go as planned for the Swedish organization. And it seems that their European Dota 2 team will struggle as well.

Alliance’s Troubles in Division II of DPC: WEU

Alliance were expected to win almost every match with ease. Given the exceptional quality of their players, with the exception of Monaspa and Team Bald Reborn, nobody should have been able to beat them in a best-of-three. But so far, they played against Monaspa, Ooredoo Thunders, and D2 Hustlers. And they lost the first two matches.

The first defeat, against Monaspa, is understandable. It was their first match as a roster and their opponents were strong. Some of the Monaspa members are former Major finalists with another Greek Organization called Ad Finem.

However, the fact that Alliance lost the second match too shows that they’re not as strong as they were regarded to be at the start of the season. Ooredoo Thunders are a completely unknown team and a few of their players have been competing professionally for a long time.

Meanwhile, Fnatic have almost an entire roster full of tier-1 players. Something’s not working and s4 will need to figure out what. If he can’t do it until the end of Tour 1, his team has no future.

In Dota 2, the only way to make money is to get good results at Majors and The International. And he can’t go to such events if he’s stuck in the second division.

A Potential Comeback

The third match played by Alliance gave fans a glimmer of hope. The team defeated a competitor that had won the first two matches of the season without losing a single game. This victory, against D2 Hustlers, could mark Alliance’s epic comeback in this division.

There are still four matches left to be played and the top two teams will get promoted to Division I. If they can’t do it in this Tour, it’s unlikely that they’ll manage to do it in the second Tour. Because in that Tour, Team Secret will compete in this division and they’ll almost certainly smash everyone.
