Alliance rebuilds its Dota 2 roster under s4

In Dota 2, when you say Alliance, you’re referring to a former TI winner. Arguably, this organization won one of the best editions of The International (the third one) and has remained relevant over the years, even though it hasn’t maintained its top position.

But in 2022, Alliance’s results were really bad. Not only did they miss The International and all of the Dota Pro Circuit Majors. They also failed to stay in the first division of the Western European region.

The 2022 Disaster

Alliance failed to do anything relevant in 2022 for two reasons. The first is obviously related to themselves and their own inability to perform well enough. Despite having excellent players like Nikolay “Nikobaby” Nikolov and Aliwi “w33” Omar, the team lost almost every single match in Division I.

On the bright side, they won almost every single match in Division II and proved that they are, in spite of everything, worthy of their spot in Western Europe’s first division. But since they finished Tour 3 with a record of 0 W – 7 L in Division I, they will start 2023 in the second division.

The other reason why Alliance failed in 2022 has to do with the strength of their opponents. At The International 11, all of the top three teams were from this region. Furthermore, three other WEU teams finished in the top 12. Against such competition, it’s no wonder that Alliance struggled the entire year.

Knowing that he needs to change something, Jonathan “Loda” Berg took the radical decision to release the entire roster. This happened at the end of September. Even Nikobaby and w33, two of the world’s best players at their respective roles, were asked to leave.

The New Alliance

Alliance will start the 2022 – 2023 Dota Pro Circuit with a new roster, built around a 30-year-old veteran who has already won The International with Alliance in 2013. Gustav “s4” Magnusson has decided that it was time for him to join his former club once again and try to succeed against all odds.

His knowledge of the game is formidable and his total career wins are $2.7 million. Over the years, he played for teams like Alliance, Team Secret, OG, Evil Geniuses, and goonsquad. If there’s anyone who can resurrect Alliance, it’s him. He’s not just a player, he’s a captain with a deep understanding of drafting.

The other four Alliance members are listed below:

  • Charlie “aQua” Arat (carry)

  • Ng “ChYuan” Chyuan (mid)

  • Remus “ponlo” Zhi Xian (roam)

  • Simon “Handsken” Haag (support)

Two of these players are from Southeast Asia and they used to compete for teams like Fnatic and Aster.Aries. Their technical prowess will likely be of great help to s4 in his quest to find a winning formula.

Not much is known at the moment about aQua, also known as CharlieDota. But he’s clearly experienced enough to have the ability to carry his own weight. The fact that he’s from Sweden and used to play in s4’s team might have influenced Loda’s decision a bit.

His former teams include goonsquad, Chicken Fighters, High Coast Esports, Ninjas in Pyjamas, Kaipi, and GODSENT.
