Stake.us is a stellar sweepstakes option for players to play the best casino games in the US. As a result, players are lining up to try this sweeps casino in the US: if you read any of our reviews, it becomes clear why that is the case. However, unfortunately, Stake.us is not available nationwide. There are some states that have laws in place that ban sweepstakes casinos such as Stake.us. We’ve got bad news for all gamers in Illinois. Stake.us is no longer available in Illinois, as of February 4th 2026.
Stake.us was legal in the state for several years, but new state legislation has outlawed Stake.us. But, why has this happened? Will this change any time soon? Keep reading through our guide as we break down exactly what the legal status of Stake.us in Illinois is.
Stake.us was actually regularly available in Illinois, with both virtual currencies, both Stake.us Gold Coins and Stake Cash, available to play with. Illinois has always been staunchly anti-gambling, and they only recently started to allow legislation that online casinos can run in the state. Since 2019, they have allowed online gambling activity to happen in the state, however, the legislation is very strict, and only casinos that meet the strict standards of Illinois' own Gaming Board are allow to operate in the state.
There is a key difference between real money gambling platforms and sweepstakes casinos though, and there are many states that also outlaw real money gambling, but allows sweepstakes casinos, such as Stake.us Georgia.
However, tightening of gaming laws by the Illinois Gaming Board (IGB) meant that Illinois started to clamp down on specifically sweepstakes casinos in their state, such as Stake.us. The first step happened on February 4th, 2026, when the IGB actually sent a cease and desist letter to Stake.us.
The cease and desist letter by the IGB was pretty clear. Their position was that Stake.us was effectively operating an unlicensed online casino. It pointed to several casinos that made it an online casino, such as the selection of games, the inclusion of Stake Cash as a redeemable cash prize currency, and the inclusion of all the games that can be found in regular Stake.com.
Although Stake.us protested the decision based on the fact that they are a sweepstakes casino, under Illinois law, they considered sweepstakes casinos to fall under the category of online casinos, so the platform was banned by the IGB.
It's important to note that this is a unique case, as Illinois did not pass new legislation that suddenly targeted and outlawed sweepstakes casinos specifically. Instead, they enacted on existing law, and clarified that within their state borders, they considered sweepstakes casinos and online casinos one and the same. As a result, Stake.us was subsequently banned from the state, and are now ineligible from receiving an Illinois Gaming License, which is an unfortunate series of events.
It's a much more complex situation than in many other states, where the laws are clear cut. However, at the end of the day, all platforms have to respect state law. Illinois has made their decision, and that is that.
But, there are plenty of other Stake.us legal states available for players to check out. We'd recommend reading on to see how you can sign up to Stake.us if you are located in a different state.
You can get started at Stake.us in just a matter of minutes. Just make sure you are based within a legal state by checking out our Stake.us review, and once you can confirm you are, you will be able to sign up in only a matter of steps:
To be blunt, we cannot see Illinois ever changing their stance on the situation. There are some states that just have strict anti-gambling laws, which simply do not allow any gaming activity, including sweeps casinos. There are plenty of these states, and honestly, we'd believe Stake.us would have a better chance of eventually launching in these states, because laws can always change due to public demand.
The situation between the IGB and Stake.us is a direct conflict, one where the IGB directly told Stake.us that they can no linger operate in theri state, under any circumstances, and were now ineligible to do business within their state borders. It's a much more complex situation than it would be for other states where Stake.us cannot legally operate in, so given all those circumstances, we cannot see Stake.us ever returning to Illinois.
However, there are almost 30 other states that Stake.us currently operate in, so we'd recommend players check them out instead.
Unfortunately, Stake.us is no longer allowed to operate in Illinois, and it seems it will stay that way for now. However, there are some online casinos and sportsbooks that are allowed to run in the state, as long as they are licensed by the IGB, and you should definitely check them out.
But, if you are specifically aiming to play Stake.us in the state, then we would recommend going to a different state to play the sweepstakes casino. Because there is plenty of value to be found in this sweeps casino: Illinois based players just won't be able to access it.
No, Illinois has outlawed Stake.us in their state. But, every state has different laws. After all, the picture might be different here compared to at Stake.us in Massachusetts.
