Reading a comprehensive Shiny review is the way to go if you want to learn more about the mystery pack site before signing up. As a collector who’s currently using the platform, I can break down what to expect.

Shiny currently focuses on packs for One Piece and Pokemon. After opening these packs, you get to keep the cards in your vault, sell them through the pawnshop, list them on the marketplace, or ship them. In addition to the packs and bonuses, I'll cover the battles, website interface, payment methods, and customer service.

Shiny 101: The basics of the mystery pack website

Shiny is a digital collectibles site where you open packs to get a trading card. The platform refers to the digital versions of its cards as Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) because they are minted on supported networks. However, each one is tied to a real card that has been authenticated and graded by the Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA).

The pack opening process at Shiny is straightforward. After completing the Shiny sign up process and you have an active account on the site, you can follow these steps to get a trading card:

  1. Click “Packs” from the left-sided menu.

  2. Choose whether you want a Pokémon or One Piece card.

  3. Pay the full amount.

  4. Tap “Open the Pack.”

  5. Get one of the trading cards inside.

How do you know the cards you can pull?

I’ve had collectors ask if it’s possible to know their pulls before opening a pack. The answer is no. Under every pack, you will find a list of the trading cards contained within the pack. The platform sorts these cards into five main categories, and starting from the least valuable, you have Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Shiny.

Each category includes the pull odds, which means the chances of getting a card in that category. To give you a clear representation of what I mean, I’m going to use the limited Pikachu Hunter Pack I found during my Shiny review as an example. The pack is worth $50 and features the following card categories:

CategoryOddsValue of cards
Bronze40%$25-$37.5
Silver35.2%$37.5-$50
Gold19.87%$50-$75
Platinum4%$75-$150
Shiny1%$200-$3,000

When you open a pack, one of the cards is randomly awarded to you. The randomness is from drand beacon (League of Entropy), an open-source software operated by 15 to 20 independent organizations worldwide.

Different types of packs you can open at Shiny

In my introduction, I mentioned that Shiny currently focuses on Pokémon and One Piece trading cards. Under One Piece, I found only one pack: the Grand Line for $100. The Pokémon section houses the most variety. There are five packs to choose from, and I’ve listed them in the table below:

Pack namePrice
Beginner Pack$15
Starter Pack$25
Pro Pack$50
Elite Pack$100
Legendary Pack$250

In addition to the standard packs, I also noticed a few limited packs. These are usually available for a certain period, after which the platform replaces or removes them. There’s also an option to “build your own pack.” In this case, you get to set the basic things. These include the pack price, pull odds, and whether you want the pack to feature trading cards for just Pokémon, One Piece, or a combination of both. However, the operator decides the number of cards to include in the pack.

What you can do with your collectibles after a rip

After opening your pack, the trading card you pull is instantly added to the vault, where it can remain for up to five years. During the storage period, there are a few ways you can decide to use your collectible. You can choose to pawn it at the pawnshop, sell it on the marketplace, or ship it to get the physical card. Below is a more detailed breakdown of each process:

Pawning your trading cards

Shiny has a dedicated pawnshop section where you can “pawn” your trading cards. Basically, it’s a buyback offer. This means you can sell your card back to the platform for a percentage of its fair market value, usually between 88% and 90%.

Interestingly, the pawnshop holds on to your card for 7 to 30 days, depending on what’s on offer when you pawn your collectibles. You have to repay the credits to get your cards back. Or, you can keep the credits and forfeit the cards. The catch is that the buyback (pawnshop) option is not always available.

Listing your card on the marketplace

I like that Shiny also serves as a peer-to-peer marketplace. This allows you to buy trading cards from other collectors and also list your pulls for sale. There are just a few essential things to note before using the marketplace:

  • There’s a 4% seller fee on every sale.
  • List only cards you legitimately own.
  • Honor your listed prices.

Shipping your trading cards

Since you own an NFT that represents a physical trading card, you can easily request redemption of the physical collectible. You simply visit the “redemptions” section under the vault, choose the cards you want, and fill out your shipping details. Keep in mind that you’ll have to complete KYC verification before your first shipment. You’re also responsible for all shipping fees.

Introducing Battles

One of the most exciting game modes I found during my Shiny review was “Battles.” This is a player-vs-player mode where you open packs alongside other collectors. Most of the time, there are active pack battles you can enter. All you have to do is pay the entry fee to secure a spot, then follow the battle rules. If you win, you get a prize.

If you don’t want to enter already existing battles, you can create yours. To do this, you select the packs you want to be opened and the number of spots you want in the battle. Once your battle is live, other users can pay the entry fee and participate.

Bonuses and promotions at Shiny

As a new user, you get a 5% discount as a Shiny bonus. This discount applies to the first pack you purchase on the platform. In addition to the welcome offer, the mystery pack site has other rewards, including the following:

🎁 Referral Bonus

Every time a collector registers using your link, they become your referral. You then receive a percentage of the marketplace fee from your referral’s trades. The exact percentage depends on your referral tier.

🏆 Level-based Rewards

Immediately after registering, you’re enrolled in the first tier of the level rewards program. As you open packs, you get XP until you have enough to progress to higher levels. The higher your level, the better your bonus.

⏳ Limited-time Promotions

The mystery box platform occasionally offers special promotions. These can be free or limited-edition packs, but they usually run for a short time.

How payments work at Shiny

Shiny allows you to fund your account using a debit card or USDC. The deposit process is easy. You only have to click the wallet icon in the left-side menu, choose your preferred payment method, and complete the transaction. Regardless of your selected payment option, funds will arrive in your account within a few seconds of you authorizing the transaction. That said, Shiny does not support withdrawals.

A basic but user-friendly website

Shiny’s dark-themed website features a layout similar to what I’ve seen at other mystery pack sites. This made it a breeze for me to find my way around.

For instance, when you launch it on computers, you’ll find a left-side menu that houses major icons, including Packs, Vault, Battles, Marketplace, Rewards, Referrals, and Wallet. The packs section has filtering options you can use to easily locate what you want, even though there aren’t so many packs to browse through.

Shiny does not have a mobile app. I did not consider this a drawback because the website worked well on smartphones and tablets. On smaller screens, you’ll find the same user-friendly interface, and this offers access to all of the platform’s offerings.

Customer service needs work

Customer service is one area where Shiny falls short. It has live chat that you can easily access by clicking the bubble icon pinned to the bottom of the site. Unfortunately, it does not facilitate real-time conversations with an agent. You have to leave a message, then wait several hours to get a response. In my opinion, it works more like an email than a live chat feature.

Security and fairness - Is Shiny legit?

Before signing up at Shiny, I wondered if the brand was legit. That led me to look into its operator, which is how I learned it is run by Shiny Inc., a Delaware-based company. I did not find any red flags about the operator. Instead, I picked up on several features that encouraged me to eventually join the platform.

For starters, it uses SSL encryption to protect its users' details. While it does not support two-factor authentication, it ensures that the outcome of every pull is authentic, thanks to the provably fair technology. I liked how detailed the Terms of Service page was, as it provided essential details about the platform’s offerings.

Another important pointer is its commitment to responsible pack opening. You have to be at least 18 years old to use the platform, and the operator confirms this through KYC verification.

My final Shiny ratings

Shiny is still a very fresh mystery pack site, but it shows lots of promise. Despite the limited pack selection, I still liked the available options. The pack price range is also reasonable, starting at $15, and if you don’t like the available packs, you can build yours.

The battle mode is a welcome addition in my opinion, as it gives you more to look forward to beyond the regular pack-opening experience. You can’t withdraw from Shiny, but you can always sell back your collectibles, list them on the marketplace, or ship them.

Overall, my Shiny ratings are high, and I recommend you try it out if you're looking to rip Pokémon and One Piece trading packs. You can click the link on this page to visit the site and register.
