As you can see, Kalshi ticks all of the right boxes if you want to sign up from Washington, but much the same would apply if you wanted to use Kalshi in Florida, or any other US state instead. Just in case you’re not familiar with prediction markets, we’ll quickly run through how individual event contracts work in the next part of our guide, and give you some examples of what you might find.

How event contracts work

The easiest way to explain event contracts is to suggest you think of them as a question which only has two possible answers.

An example in the sports category might be ‘Will the Washington Nationals beat the Boston Red Sox? If the market shows 64% Yes and 36% No, the two sides add up to 100%. These percentages represent the market’s implied probability, based on the prices traders are willing to pay for each outcome.

Naturally, you will have your own opinion of the outcome of this matchup. If you predict the Nationals will win, you can purchase a contract for $0.64, but if you predict the match will end in favor of the Red Sox, you can purchase a No contract for $0.36.

When the event ends and the outcome has been verified, correctly predicted event contracts pay out $1.00. Incorrect predictions receive $0.00.

Market fluctuations

In real life, the probability of the event happening will change, especially close to the start of the match. There are two possible reasons for this, the first being that some kind of outside influence has changed market sentiment. A key player being ruled out of the game through injury, for example.

In turn, the percentages will also fluctuate as more people buy or sell contracts. It’s important to understand this part, because it means the value of your contracts can go up or down. So you can easily find yourself in a position where your contracts are worth less than their original purchase price.

While all of the prediction market categories at Kalshi are fairly active, there’s no doubt that some undeniably attract more traders. In this next part of our guide, we’ll take a look at those, based on the time we spent on the site.

Sports

If you’re a sports fan, this part of the Kalshi is sure to have huge appeal, and you’ll find prediction markets available for no less than 15 sports. The list of sports you’ll encounter ranges from Chess, Lacrosse, and Motorsports through to Soccer and tennis, plus six esports including Valorant, League of Legends, and Dota2.

However, the most prevalent sports event contracts cater to the top four US leagues: NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL. So let’s say you’ve signed up at Kalshi from California, you’ll most likely find prediction markets for all of your state teams, but especially so if you follow any of California’s five MLB teams.

Cryptocurrencies

Kalshi offers an excellent selection of prediction markets for cryptocurrencies. You’ll find crypto event contracts available for all of the following cryptos.

  • Bitcoin (BTC)
  • Ethereum (ETH)
  • Solana (SOL)
  • Ripple (XRP)
  • Dogecoin (DOGE)
  • Binance Coin (BNB)
  • Hyperliquid (HYPE)

Kalshi’s crypto prediction markets for those tokens are all available across six different timelines: 15 minutes, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly and annual, with event contracts based on price movement (Up/Down).

If you are a crypto enthusiast, you’ll already be aware that cryptocurrency is volatile, and even if you are experienced, this type of event is challenging to predict accurately, especially so the 15 minute minute markets.

Culture

The culture prediction markets category most surely covers the broadest range of events. Kalshi’s culture event contracts are divided into seven types:

  • Movies
  • Music
  • Awards
  • Collectibles
  • People
  • Television
  • Video games

That should give you a pretty good idea of the type of events you’ll find covered here. While most are fairly self-explanatory, we were rather intrigued by the ‘Collectibles’ which is a culture option we haven’t seen before.

And suffice to say we weren’t disappointed to find a random selection of event contracts that go from fairly straightforward events like predicting the price of luxury fragrances, right through to predicting the price of “Gus” A Mounted Tyrannosaurus Rex Skeleton. For context, the options were over, or under $30 million.

Meanwhile, those of you who use Kalshi in New York may want to take a look at the People category. Particularly so if you want to make predictions relating to Taylor Swift’s upcoming nuptials at Madison Square Garden.
