Prediction markets at Kalshi

We’ve decided to jump straight in at the deep end and give you a random example of an available event contract from each of the six prediction market categories available at Kalshi.

Prediction market categoryExample event contract
Sports2026 World Cup Winner: France or Argentina
CultureLove Island Week 5 Eliminations: Amora or Gal
EconomicsCore Inflation June 2026: Above or Below 2.8%
ClimateHighest temperature in Miami today: Above or Below 93℉
PoliticsWill the SAVE Act become law: Yes or No
CryptocurrenciesWhen will Bitcoin reach $100k again: Before or After January 2027

There were a couple of reasons that we chose to show you those examples at this stage. The first being that it doesn’t matter whether you trade at Kalshi in Texas, or Florida. You will find event contracts that are relevant to your local area, plus others that are on a global scale.

There’s more to Kalshi’s categories than meets the eye

Kalshi’s prediction markets are loosely divided into the six categories we mentioned above, but that isn’t quite where your choices end. If you click on any category, Culture, for example, you’ll see that it’s split into more specific topics, namely: Movies, Music, Awards, Collectibles, People, Television, and Video games. You’ll find that all of the other main categories are sub-divided in a similar way.

What exactly is an event contract?

The basic concept of an individual event contract is straightforward. Think of it as predicting the outcome of a real life event, where there are only two possible outcomes. The options might be presented as a question with a Yes/No answer, or worded in such a way that the outcomes are Up/Down, or Over/Under, but there are always just two.

Each side of the event contract will show a value from $0.01 to $0.99, i.e. both sides always total $1.00. You will also see them displayed as percentages, which depict the opinion of all traders who have bought a contract.

For instance, “Will Trump attend the World Cup Final?” Current market sentiment shows Yes 86%, No 14%, meaning that 86% of people who have bought this contract believe Trump will attend. If you agree and decide to buy a Yes contract, it would cost $0.86, alternatively, a No contract would cost $0.14.

Whichever outcome is correct when the event ends, anyone who has made an accurate prediction will receive $1.00, all incorrect predictions receive nothing. In this much-simplified example, we have used a single contract, but in reality, most traders buy multiple contracts.

Fluctuation

Another factor to think about is market fluctuation. The price of the contract we used as an example won’t remain static, market sentiment might change, or some sort of outside event might have an influence on the outcome. In turn, that means the value of any contract can go up or down

Selling event contracts

As well as buying event contracts, you can also sell your contracts. There are two possible reasons you might make that decision: to secure a profit if the value of your contracts have increased, or to minimize losses if the value has fallen.

For every event contract, you’ll always have access to the following information:

  • A real-time customizable graph
  • Total trading volume for the event
  • Current probabilities for both outcomes
  • The official resolution source
  • Market Rules
  • Link to a ‘Full Rules’ document
  • Timeline and payout information

It’s important to understand that Kalshi is a CFTC-regulated trading exchange. As such, there are certain requirements the brand must fulfill that apply to all of the traders who use the site. Those apply regardless of whether you’re signing up at Kalshi from Washington State or any other state

First of all, you need to be located in one of the 45 eligible states that Kalshi can operate in. Unfortunately, if you are located in Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Nevada, New York, or Ohio, you will not be able to sign up for Kalshi, and certain states will have categories like sports restricted.

If you are living in an eligible state, you need to be a permanent US citizen aged 18 years or older and able to complete the account verification with the relevant documents. If you meet all of those requirements, these are the steps to take:

  1. Go to Kalshi using the link on our page banners

  2. Click on the green ‘Sign up’ button at the top right of your screen

    • Employment details: Full SSN, current employer, and job title

  5. Once verified, you can link a preferred payment method like a bank or debit card, and deposit the minimum of $10.

  6. That's it, you’re ready to start trading on Kalshi’s prediction markets, where you can trade the minimum to unlock the welcome bonus.

Irrespective of whether you’re signing up from Florida, or accessing Kalshi from New York, your account won’t be accessible right away. It can take up to 48 hours for Kalshi to review the information you have provided. During this time, your account status will show as ‘Pending’.

Let’s take a look at the bonus for new Kalshi traders

As soon as Kalshi has confirmed that your new account is open, you’ll be able to make a deposit ready to start trading. The main options are debit card (Visa or Mastercard) or bank transfer. To use either, you will need to link your payment method to your Kalshi account first.

There’s a minimum $10 deposit requirement, or $25 if you want to claim the welcome bonus, and it’s also worth noting that Kalshi adds a 2% processing fee to all deposits. With that out of the way, you are ready to start trading event contracts.

Once you have traded $25 worth of event contracts, Kalshi will add $25 of bonus trade credits to your account. There are no restrictions on how you use the bonus trades, but it expires after 30 days, so you will need to keep that in mind.
