After 2020’s The International cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, The International X will return in August with a hefty prize pool of over $40million. It’s safe to say that Dota 2’s biggest world tournament will be back bigger than ever before.
The International, started in 2011, is one of the biggest esports tournaments in the world, watched by a worldwide community, and is one of the most bet on competitions in the esports world. Bookmakers are currently still in the process of creating the best Dota betting odds that they can offer. Closer to the tournament, bookmakers will start showing their selection of Dota betting odds on offer for esports punters, so be sure to check back closer to August.
OG Esports are the team to look out for, with the European esports team winning the last two of The International tournaments, meaning everyone else will have their sights set on the reigning and defending champions.
Part of the Dota Pro Circuit (DPC), the group stages for the first Major of 2021 are currently taking place. The Singapore Major will return after it’s cancellation last year and is shaping up to be an extremely high-standard competition.
Organised by ONE Esports, the first Major of the year already has a few teams confirmed. First of all, Team Secret have had an undefeated 2021 so far, so they are an obvious front-runner going into the Major. FNATIC performed very well in the Southeast Asia League to progress to the Major – another team that we recommend looking out for when the latest odds are released.
Bookmakers will shortly be revealing their Dota Major betting odds, which is great news for us Dota fans. Working out the favourite, however, will be a much more difficult process, for both bettors and bookmakers.
Once the first Major of the DPC has been completed – the grand final in Singapore will be April 4 - all sights will be set on the next Major. The second DPC Major will take part in June, so it’s only a couple of months after the first tournament.
With a prize pool of $500,000, competition will be high with everyone fighting to be winners, looking at almost half of the total prize fund available if successful. As the first Major’s odds have not yet been released, the latest DPC Major 2 odds won’t be released until closer to the event.
The odds will be based on the first Major’s results, but as the season continues, a lot of things could change between now and the beginning of June.
What are betting odds? Well, if you’re asking this question, or you’re a bit confused on what they all mean, then continue reading as we explain a brief guide to odds.
In simple terms, betting odds are a numerical probability that a certain outcome will happen. Therefore, the more likely something is to happen, the lower the odds will be. If a result is unlikely, then the odds will be set higher. With odds, if you place a bet on something likely, then the rewards will be smaller than if you wagered on something with an unlikely probability.
Take the example of a simple match winner market on Dota. If one team is more likely to win than the other, the odds will reflect that. The favoured team will have lower odds, so even though the bet is more likely to be successful, the rewards won’t be as much. On the other hand, if you place a bet on the ‘underdog’, they will have greater odds. If they win, however, the winnings will be larger in value.
Decimal odds: Probably the most common way of odds being displayed is through decimals, and the format you'll see on the rest of our Dota 2 betting sites. The decimals reflect the pay-out of a successful bet in regard to 1.0. Therefore, if the odds were 1.2, and you placed a £10 bet, your returns would be £12.
Fractional odds: Popular for UK customers, fractional odds show what your returns will be in relation to £1. For example, a 3/1 odd will return more than a 2/1 odd. With a successful £10 bet on both of these odds, your returns would be £30 and £20 respectively.
American odds: Also known as ‘moneyline’ odds or ‘lines’, American odds show customers the favourites and underdogs with positive and negative odds. It shows how much a $100 bet would return. In an example, an American odd of -100 would mean you have to bet $100 in order to win $100. In contrast, a +250 odd would mean your successful $100 bet would return $250.
As we mentioned just before, moneyline odds are another word for American odds. This type of odds is easy to understand, and can be used quickly once you have the knowledge of how it works.
In Dota, moneyline odds are available for multiple markets. To show you how moneyline odds work in Dota, we’ll take the example of a match between Team A and Team B.
The matchwinner market on a bookmaker’s site shows these odds for Dota 2 esports matches:
Team A: -150
Team B: +200
So, in this example, a bet of £/$/EUR150 on Team A would be required for you to win the equivalent of $100. Meanwhile, if you were to bet $100 on Team B, your winnings would be a total of $200.
It’s worth noting that these odds will change and be adjusted, especially if you’re betting live on Dota.
Spreads are options available to punters to bet on even more Dota markets. With spreads, Dota bettors like yourself can bet on either team with relatively even odds. It is worth noting that spread bets are only offered on Dota 2 matches or competitions that use a best-of format, where more than one game/map is played.
In basic terms, spread bets allow you to ‘give’ points to the underdog and ‘taking’ them from the favourite, bookies will give punters like yourself the chance to bet on much more even odds.
For example, a best-of-three match format will have a spread of +/-1.5. In this scenario, the favourites will have to win 2-0 in the series to cover the ‘spread’ and provide a successful for you punters.
First of all, there are a number of betting strategies when it comes to odds betting. There’s no right or wrong strategy, either - it’s your preference, where you decide what’s best for yourself. We can advise and recommend, but the ultimate decision goes to you.
Arb Betting Strategy: The arb strategy, with its full title of arbitrage betting, involves putting multiple bets on a single esports match. If you’re putting bets on the different outcomes, then it is guaranteed that one of those bets will win. Bookies are not happy with this strategy being an option for customers, as they will have to pay-out the one bet that is successful.
Matched Betting Strategy: The matched strategy is considered another popular betting strategy in the gambling world. This method also involves using a bookmaker’s sign up offer or bonus offer. Using this to bet on a particular outcome, whilst placing a bet with your own funds against that same outcome is what the matched betting strategy is.
This way, one of your bets will win, meaning you will return something. This also reduces gambling risk, as you know one of the bets is guaranteed to win.

Online odds are adjusted much quicker than the traditional in-store bookies, as online is much quicker at keeping up-to-date with any pieces of information. Online betting is much easier for esports punters, with everything easily accessible thanks to your smart devices.
Odds will be updated quicker on online bookmakers, meaning online bettors will have the opportunity to place bets on live odds, for example. This can rarely be done if you’re betting offline.
The answer to this one is a simple no. When you first sign up to a bookmaker, the operator will usually ask you about your preferred odds display, and will adjust all of the odds on their site to what you want it to be.
If this isn’t the case, then that’s not to worry. Once you have signed up and you are on the bookmaker’s site, there will be an option available to you so you can change the setting of how odds are shown on your account. This way, you have the freedom to choose what’s easiest to understand.
