WoW Player CountThought that the WoW Player count was waning, then think again. The figures from 2023 are now in, and they might be surprising to some of you.

The total player base is just over 135 million, meanwhile, around 1.29 million players still log in to World of Warcraft every single day. This means that it is still statistically the most popular MMO in the world in 2026.

  • There are currently over 135 million active WoW subscribers
  • On average 1.29 million players log in and play WoW daily
  • It was the No. 1 ranked MMO with the most players in 2023
  • Early projections show that it is likely to maintain the number one spot in 2026
  • The data for January 2024 shows a rise compared to the end of 2023
  • World of Warcraft was first released in 2004

How many people still play WoW?

World of Warcraft first came to our PC screens way back in 2004 and quickly became one of the most popular games of all time.

But how many people are still playing it in 2026? The answer is probably more than you might think…

Blizzard Entertainment’s flagship game was one of the pioneers of the massively multiplayer online game (MMO) genre. But since the development of less time-intensive games and the increasing popularity of games that are promoted better by the best esport betting sites, the number of MMO players is fastly dwindling…

Or is it?

How many players on WoW in 2026?

The current stats show that the total World of Warcraft player base in 2026 is over 135 million. Daily, the average number of players that log in every day was more than 1.29 million according to 2023 statistics.

Moreover, the stats for January and February so far in 2024 show that the daily number of players is up to around the 2 million mark. However, this increase could be partially explained by the fact that people in the West generally tend to stay in and spend more time gaming in the post-Christmas winter months than they do the rest of the year.

Does the high WoW Player Count show that MMOs and MMORPGs aren’t dying?

So here’s the ultimate question - do these numbers dispel the claim that MMO is a dying genre is a complete myth? Undoubtedly, it doesn’t hurt the case for MMO fans, but it doesn’t necessarily prove the doubters wrong either.

While the number of WoW and MMORPG players remains steady, the number of new players isn’t growing. The average age of a WoW player is 31.90 years, most of whom have been with the game since the 00s. It also has more players aged 50+ than it does in the 18-24 bracket.

Why are younger players not playing WoW and MMOs

There are several reasons why MMORPGs like WoW are not as popular with players aged 18-24 as the likes of Fortnite, Valorant, and LoL. One of the main reasons is the time investment required as well as the high learning curve.

We live in a digitized society where our need for instant gratification is becoming increasingly easier to satisfy. Therefore the time required to play and develop in World of Warcraft seems daunting and off putting for potential new players.

Moreover, most of the current subscription-base are in their third decade of playing the game. Therefore new players are a long way behind when starting out.

WoW Player Count - Conclusion

MMOs might be on the decline overall, but WoW is a thriving beating heart in an otherwise dying scene. How can Blizzard Entertainment maintain or better the WoW player count?

Like everyone else, they will have to adapt and change WoW to make it fit better into the modern world. Introducing a more esports-friendly game mode might be a good place to start. Speaking of which, you can check out the top-rated free betting app for esports here at Strafe.
