Will there be Starcraft 3?

First and foremost, let’s tackle the main question here - will there be a Starcraft 3?

There have been nearly 14 years of waiting and much anticipation among fans of Blizzard Entertainment’s popular real-time strategy (RTS) game franchise.

What the history of the Starcraft franchise tells us

Starcraft 2 was released in 2010, and during this time, fans have steadily been given new updated versions and variations of the game to keep them entertained. Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm was released on 12 March 2013 with Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void following just over two years later.

However, Starcraft Remastered came out back in 2017. This long hiatus can only mean two things:

  1. Blizzard Entertainment is working on something big for the franchise
  2. The Starcraft franchise ir running cold

While we cannot confirm anything, we’re quietly hopeful that it might be option one, and here’s why…

Is it in the works? The latest Starcraft 3 news…

Blizzard Entertainment is notoriously good at playing its cards close to its chest and preventing leaks. However, there have been snippets of Twitter activity from Blizzard Entertainment president, Mike Ybarra that could point to something.

While he hasn’t put out anything confirming or even teasing a possible third Starcraft edition, he has been known to engage with Tweets about Starcraft. For example, back in 2022, he responded to a block caps Tweet stating “PLEASE SAVE STARCRAFT” with a smiley face.

The LinkedIn leak

Perhaps the biggest hint that Starcraft 3 is in development came back in 2021, with the infamous “LinkedIn Leak”. On their profile, a Blizzard Entertainment employee mentioned working on an “unannounced Starcraft project”.

The post was swiftly deleted, and its credibility has been questioned. Still, it suggests that even if Starcraft 3 isn’t in the works, we’re likely going to see another variation of Starcraft 2 at the very least.

Is the Starcraft 3 release date confirmed?

StarcraftAs of September 2024, there has been no mention or even any rumor of a possible release date for Starcraft 3. Therefore all that we have to go on is speculation.

There was a fan theory that a big announcement was forthcoming on the 25th anniversary of the original Starcraft. However, the 25th anniversary came and went in 2023 without so much as a whisper from any of the head honchos at Blizzard Entertainment.

If we use Starcraft 2 as an example, it was first announced in 2007, before being officially released in 2010. Should Blizzard Entertainment follow a similar pattern here, this means that we are looking at a 2027 release date at the very earliest.

This is frustrating for all of us impatient Starcraft fans, but Blizzard is known for its attention to detail. Their back catalog, which includes WoW and Valorant, shows that they would rather wait to release a polished game than rush out a patching product.

Is there a chance we won’t see Starcraft 3 at all?

So long as nothing has been announced or confirmed, this is a realistic possibility, and some signs suggest it could be the case. Statistics show that the popularity of RTS games is on the decline, with gamers favoring FPS and MOBAs.

While RTS games like Starcraft have a massive core following that isn’t dwindling, they are struggling to attract new players. This may be priced into the thinking of the powers that be at Blizzard Entertainment, which would put Starcraft 3 quite far down on the priority list.

The popularity of Starcraft esports?

If you are a big Starcraft fan, one way that you can find constant entertainment in the absence of a third edition of the game is through esports. It has become one of the most popular online competitive games, and you can find the best Starcraft 2 betting sites right here.

Conclusion - The anticipation for Starcraft 3 is high, but we still have to wait…

In conclusion, there have been some promising signs and hints, but nothing concrete yet, so all we can do is wait. In the meantime, you can compare Starcraft 2 odds and the top esports betting bonuses with us here at Strafe.
