League of Legends Worlds 2026: How the Swiss Stage Works

Publish Date: 10/10/2026

The LoL Worlds is the most exciting League of Legends esport tournament out there right now. It takes the 19 best LoL teams in the world right now, and determines exactly who is the champion of the world when it comes to LoL through a competitive tournament where virtually every team plays each other at least once.

One stage of the tournament that confuses everyone though is the Swiss stage. In this guide, we will break down exactly how the Swiss Stage works, breaking it down round by round, and every factor that goes into it. Let’s get started.

What is the Swiss Stage?

The Swiss Stage is the second stage in the Worlds tournament, contested with sixteen teams, with the goal to narrow down the playing field to eight teams for the knockout stages (quarterfinal and semifinals). The teams are composed of the top 15 seeded teams in the Worlds, with the sixteenth team being the Play-Ins winner.

Rather than traditional group play, teams face opponents with matching records, which is how the initial seeding is done. The Swiss element determines who advances and who is eliminated: once a team gets three victories, they advance to the knockout stages. Once a team faces three defeats, they are eliminated from the competition. The entire Swiss stage will be held in the Credit Union of Texas Event Center, and will take place from October 23rd to October 31st.

So, it all sounds very simple when broken down like this. But, how exactly does it all work? How are seeds determined, and how exactly are each games played? Well, let’s cover exactly what the Swiss stage will look like game from game.

How does the Swiss Stage Actually Work?

In practice, there is a lot more that goes into the Swiss Stage than just ‘get three wins to advance, three wins and you’re out’. There are different factors applied to certain games depending on what type of game the team is playing.

Best of One vs Best of Three Matches

Early matches are Bo1 games. They are standard matches where teams jockey for position, to gain points, these will just be one play matches. But, anytime a team faces advancement, or elimination, the game will become a best of three match.

This differentiation makes both types of matches completely different. The early best of 1 games gives teams very little room to adapt: they have once chance to get themselves on the leaderboard to pick up a couple of victories, and if they lose, they’re already on the downward slope. However, advancement and elimination games gives teams more room to adapt over the course of three games. The psychology of the gameplay is completely different, depending on if its Bo1 vs Bo3.

How Teams Qualify or Get Eliminated

So, win three you qualify for the quarter finals. Lose three, you’re out of the tournament. It is simple, but there are so many different constellations where qualification or elimination can happen, it can be hard to wrap your head around. Remember, the way the Swiss round is put together means teams can only play five games throughout the entire Swiss stage. I’ve put together this table below to better outline how it all works in practice:

Record What happens
3-0 Qualifies undefeated
3-1 Qualifies after four matches
3-2 Qualifies in the final round
2-3 Eliminated in the final round
1-3 Eliminated after four matches
0-3 Eliminated without a win

Worlds 2026 Swiss Stage: Round by Round Breakdown

Each round starts, and is determined based on tiers. The top, Tier 1 teams are matched up with Tier 4 teams, meanwhile Tier 2 teams will be matched up with Tier 3 teams. Once the seeding is done, teams will be thrust into the first round of gameplay.

1️⃣ Round

The 16 teams will compete in standard Bo1 games. This means eight Bo1 games, whoever wins the first game is matched up with other winning teams, whoever loses the first game is matched up with losing teams in the following round.

2️⃣ Round

In the second round, all the 1-0 teams will be matched up against each other, and all the 0-1 teams will be matched up against each other. Now, the seeding will be more complex: 2-0 teams are seeded against each other, 1-1 are matched up and 0-1 teams will battle for survival in round 3, in the interest of fairness.

3️⃣ Round

The first qualification matches for the knockout stages will happen for the four 2-0 teams, while the four 0-2 teams battle for survival as the first eliminations happen. The other eight 1-1 teams will jockey for position.

4️⃣ Round

The remaining 2-1 teams will fight to qualify, while the other 1-2 teams battle to avoid elimination.

5️⃣ Round

The six remaining 2-2 teams play three decisive Bo3 series games to determine who the last three to qualify for the knockout stage will be.

It’s a lot more simple to understand when it is broken down! Now, you may be asking: what about matchmaking? What are these tiers, and how are they seeded?

How Does Swiss Stage Seeding and Matchmaking Work?

Essentially, the seeding works through a Tier system. There are four seperate Tiers in the tournament, with teams being placed in higher Tiers based on how strong there performances were in their regional league and year round. Here is a current look into how all four tiers look:

Tier Teams
Tier 1 GEN, AL, TLAW, G2
Tier 2 CBLOL winner, TSW, HLE, BLG
Tier 3 LYON, MKOI, T1, TES
Tier 4 CFO, IG, DK, Play-In Winner

Once the Tiers are fully decided (by October 10th, when the CBLOL is decided), Tier 1 teams will be matched up with Tier 4 teams, while Tier 2 teams will be matched up with Tier 3 teams. Teams from the same region cannot meet in Round 1.

From Round 2 onwards, the Tiers aren’t deciders: teams with identical records will be seeded against each other. Rematches are prohibited, but same-region matches will become possible from Round 2 onwards, depending on how games are drawn. Prediction markets are offering wagers on who will be drawn against who, with brands such as Polymarket and Kalshi offering plenty of variety and markets. What Happens After the Swiss Stage?

Once the Swiss stage is finished, the Worlds tournament will move onto the Knockout stage: quarterfinals, and semifinals. Both these events will also take place in the Event Center in Allen, in early November. The games take place in standard, best of five series eliminators: whoever wins the eliminators, advances to the next round.

Interestingly enough, the two undefeated 3-0 teams will be drawn against the to 3-2 qualifiers in the quarterfinals. The other four qualified teams are paired separately. This is an interesting wrinkle to the Worlds tournament, where the Swiss stages actually have consequences for teams throughout the tournament. Prediction markets will also offer plenty of markets on what the knockout stages will look like: we’d recommend checking out our Kalshi review and Polymarket to learn more about this.

Why Do Worlds Use a Swiss Format?

The Swiss format may seem long winded and confusing to some players, who may just prefer a simple bo5 single elimination format, like the later rounds do. But, in all honesty, there are plenty of benefits to Worlds currently using this gaming format:

  • Teams play opponents with similar records throughout, so for the interest of both fairness and entertaining gameplay for the viewer, it always remains competitive.
  • Strong performers have an opportunity to qualify earlier than others if they win all their games early, or do a clean sweep.
  • Struggling teams get plenty of opportunities to recover, as they can go two losses down and bounce back with three wins to qualify for the quarterfinals.
  • The Bo3 format for the advancement and elimination games create drama for the viewer, as it also gives teams a chance to fully strategise, recover and bounce back when they need to

The group stage had been a staple in Worlds for decades, but in 2023, they abandoned the old format in favor for Swiss stage play. It has been positively received, by both fans and players, as it does offer a more competitive, and fair gameplay field early in the tournament. It also makes the tournament longer, which means we can watch the Worlds for longer.

So, I am not complaining! In fact, in our Polymarket review, we mention how the variety of certain esports games allows for more prediction market variety, so from all POVs, the Swiss stage was the right step forward.

The Swiss Stage Offers Competitive, Entertaining Gameplay Early

Overall, here at Strafe, we are with the majority: the Swiss stage is a great format. The three win/three loss rule gives teams plenty of chances to prove dominance, while also allowing some teams who may be off form early to restrategise and recover to qualify for the knockouts. The way the matches are seeded and matched up are also fair, with a cap on five rounds maximum stopping the Swiss stage from dragging on too long.

All in all, big thumbs up from us. Keep following us here on Strafe as we update you on Worlds 2026 as it unfolds, and also point you towards the best prediction markets out there right now for LoL Worlds 2026.
