Highlights From The Forthcoming Olympic Esports Series

It’s the moment that many gamers have been waiting for when the Olympic Esports Series kicks off this week in Singapore. The tournament features four days of pro gaming excellence that run from June 22-25 at the Suntec Convention Centre.

The Olympic Esports Series was created by the International Olympic Commision in conjunction with the publishers of its featured games such as NBA 2K and Fortnite. While the actual tournament began at the start of March, the qualifying rounds have all concluded and now the live in-person finals are due to get underway. Here are some of the key events to look out for in the 2023 Olympic Esports Series.

Exclusive Fortnite maps

The Olympic Esports Series will include an exclusive map for the Fortnite gaming tournaments. This is called the International Shooting Sport Federation Island and it will feature a special terrain on which players have to display their shooting skills to get the best score.

It’s going to be fascinating to see whether Fortnite stars such as Sebastian ‘Suns’ Cole and Abdullah ‘Acorn’ Akhras have what it takes to knock the current Fortnite Championship Series winner, Yuma ‘Pepoclip’ Nomura off his perch. But with other players coming from as far afield as Australia, Canada, Brazil and Japan, it’s going to be too hard to call. The action kicks off at 8pm SST on 24 June.

The arrival of international NBA 2K pro gaming

NBA 2K has long been known as being the closest thing that you’re going to get to playing in the NBA from a computer screen. However, the basketball simulator is set to make its biggest-ever international debut at the Olympic Esports Series.

Already the first NBA 2K eFIBA season has taken place this year. This featured a series of regional tournaments taking place in Brazil and the Philippines, and now the winning five-person national teams will take to the stage in Singapore.

This will be an exhibition event that takes place on 25 June, and it promises to be a big step up for international NBA 2K gaming. There will also be exhibition events for other esports such as Rocket League.

Street Fighter 6 comes to esports

Street Fighter is arguably one of the most popular video games of all-time, and it’s finally getting ready to make its long-overdue arrival into the world of esports at the Olympic Esports Series.

While Capcom only released the Street Fighter 6 game early this June, it will feature as an exhibition game in Singapore featuring players from a range of countries including the US, the UK and Japan. These will include renowned Street Fighter competitors such as Hajime ‘Tokido’ Taniguchi and Kim-Philippe ‘the4philzz’ Ruddy, who’ll be aiming to show their dominance of the fledgling esport on 25 June.

Just Dance at the Olympic Esports Series

The Olympic Esports Series will also be introducing a series of games that might fall outside of the usual categorization of esports. Nowhere is this more true than when the largest-ever Just Dance competition takes place in Singapore. All of this shows that the Olympic Esports Series will be an esports tournament like no other.
