Betting on College Sports in New York - This is what you need to know (options, limitations, etc.)

Betting is now legal in New York, and the sporting options available to you are endless. You can bet on NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, and UFC, among many more professional leagues across some of the best NY gambling sites in the world. But, many of you dedicated sporting fans want to know: can you bet on college sports?

We know that platforms like DraftKings, Fanduel, and BetMGM do offer college sports options across the board, but the question has to be: does New York restrict sports betting on college sports?

Well, the simple answer is not to an extent. Collegiate activities in New York are out of bounds according to the New York Gaming Commission, so you cannot wager on any New York college teams in any capacity.

That includes football, basketball, baseball, and collegiate wrestling. It’s a similar restriction that neighbor New Jersey has placed on their sports betting in the state, and the reasons for this seem to be down to immaturity.

Why can’t I bet on college sports in New York?

This is a controversial opinion, but the reasoning behind this rule is that it’s believed college players will be more likely to sabotage games or throw in the towel for wagering purposes. We at don’t like to take a stance on opinions or rumors like this, however, New York college teams are out of bounds when it comes to sports betting.

However, there is some light at the end of the tunnel. College betting itself is still legal. You can still place wagers on college teams that are based outside of New York, and on leagues like the NCAAF and NCAA wrestling.

However, if it involves New York-based teams or New York athletes, then it’s out of bounds. That’s a bit fairer than what New Jersey offers, which is no betting opportunity at all.

The only other restriction that we can find is that it’s illegal to place prop bets on college teams in any capacity.

This means the only bets you can place single bets and accumulators, and not get into the details of betting on certain outcomes that may affect the game. This could be another preventative measure to ensure college players would not throw or sabotage games to meet a certain prop betting outcome.

Nevertheless, at least there are some college betting options available in New York. You can still wager on the NCAA, you just can’t bet on your home teams. We’d recommend you check out Fanduel for some great college betting.

They have competitive odds for college football, college wrestling, and college baseball, as well as featuring regular bonus offers on college divisions. For example, you can place a risk-free parlay on NCAA soccer, for up to $10. So you place your $10 on a parlay bet on college soccer, and if your bet doesn’t win, you get your wager refunded to you in credits.

Either way, if you're looking to get yours bets underway, why don't you check out our top welcome bonuses.
