One of the biggest mobile gaming tournaments is heading to South East Asia. Riot Games has partnered with ESL Gaming and their mobile focused vertical ESL Mobile to host the Wild Rift SEA Championship 2021. Many consider mobile gaming as the future of esports and this is one of the biggest investments in it yet.

The Championship

This is a very new esport. League of Legends: Wild Rift was released less than a year ago and this tournament will be one of the first chances that international esports betting fans will have to try betting on the new event.

The League of Legends: Wild Rift Southeast Asia Championship 2021 is going forward on the 14th of September, and it will last for just over a month until it concludes on the 3rd of October. 21 of the best teams from SEA will take part and fight for a $200,000 prize pool. As well as the prize money, they can also gain a place at the Wild Rift World Championship 2021 at the end of the year.

9 regions are taking part in the event. 8 of them are from Southeast Asia and the final region is Oceania, comprising of Australia and New Zealand. 20 of the teams are coming from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. These will be the top teams from the ongoing Wild Rift SEA Icon Series: Fall Season. Teams from Australia and New Zealand will take part in Oceania Qualifiers to see which team will head to the event.

The structure of the event

The Wild Rift SEA Championship 2021 will be split into three main stages of competition:

  • Stage 1 - Play-Ins: September 14 - 19, 2021
  • Stage 2 - Group Stages: September 23 - 26, 2021
  • Stage 3 - Main Event: September 30 - October 3, 2021

Since this is such a young esports, the details surrounding it are a bit confusing while they take their time to find their footing. As it stands, the winners of the 8 Wild Rift Icon Series in Southeast Asia and the Oceania Qualifiers will automatically have a place at the group stages of the event. Then the 8 regions from Southeast Asia will also gain a place at the play-ins.

The Thai team confuses the structure even more. Evos Esports, a Thailand-based esports organisation won the Summer Super Cup 2021 and as such they are guaranteed a place in the event. If they do poorly in their regions Icon Series, a spot will be taken from Vietnam to ensure that they still have a place.

The future for Riot Games and Wild Rift

Riot Games is the leading developer and publisher in the esports world. Every single game that they develop has a focus on the world of esports or at least the world of competitive multiplayer. Their FPS, Valorant, is having a meteoric rise in popularity. They even have a few new games in the horizon like a a console version of the game, League of Legends: Wild Rift, and a spinoff single-player, turn-based RPG for consoles and PC.

Riot Games will be sharing more information about the qualified teams and event details soon.
