It feels like there’s a new blockchain platform every day. Though Solana is something of a newcomer on the block, its performance and speed advantages have made it one of the top platforms for Solana Poker and more since its 2020 launch.

Solana is the home to all types of things, including NFTs to gaming platforms. Many of these gaming platforms are built with the Solana Poker app included. Though there are several other casino games available on the blockchain, this one gives you a chance to play one of the most popular skill-based games in the world.

What is Solana Poker?

Like some of the best Dogecoin betting sites, Solana Poker is a decentralized application – or dapp – built on the Solana blockchain platform. It lets you play peer-to-peer poker games where your device connects directly to others instead of running through a server. The application leverages the high-speed and low-cost transaction processing capabilities of the Solana network to offer a fast and seamless poker experience.

You’ll usually use Solana tokens, SOL, to participate in games, and winnings are paid out in the same currency. Depending on the game, you may be able to use other currencies, but it’s relatively rare to see a game on the Solana blockchain that doesn’t use SOL.

Poker dapps on Solana are built to be fair and transparent, with all game outcomes determined by smart contracts on the blockchain. In addition to the classic table experience, Solana Poker also offers a range of features such as multi-table tournaments, private tables, and leaderboards to enhance the player experience.

These games have become more popular, with the promises of eliminating intermediaries, reducing fees, and providing players with greater control over their funds. Though it’s important to check regulations where you live before diving in. Now that you have a deeper understanding of Solana poker, let’s get into the strategies that can help you win big! Bear in mind that these strategies can help you if you are playing Dogecoin poker as well, or poker on any other platform for that matter.

Solana Poker strategies

Before we dive into the strategies for your first game, let’s cover some of the important points about Solana Poker itself. There are several popular variants of poker, but in most cases, you’ll be playing Texas Hold’em, Omaha, Seven Card Stud, or Five Card Draw.

Each variant of poker has its own rules and gameplay mechanics, but they all involve a combination of betting, strategy, and skill. Texas Hold'em is one of the most popular variants of poker and is often featured in online poker games, both centralized and decentralized. In Texas Hold'em, players are dealt two cards (hole cards) and use those cards in combination with five community cards to make the best five-card hand possible.

Omaha is another popular variant of poker where players are dealt four hole cards and must use exactly two of those cards in combination with three community cards to make the best five-card hand possible. Seven Card Stud and Five Card Draw are older variants of poker that are still played today, although they are less popular than Texas Hold'em and Omaha.

So throughout this article, we’ll primarily focus on ways to improve your Texas Hold’em and Omaha strategy. Each dapp may have different rules and gameplay mechanics, so be sure to learn the rules of your specific game before putting down your SOL, but this general advice will serve you well across each of your games.

Texas Hold’em Poker Strategy

No matter which type of poker you’re playing, the most important part of the game is studying the tendencies of your opponents and the situation. These Solana Poker strategies are contingent on specific moments during your game, and even when you’re playing online, you can still get a sense of how your opponents are approaching the game after a few rounds.

1. Starting hand selection

One of the most important decisions in Texas Hold'em is which starting hands to play. Experienced players tend to play tight and only play strong hands, such as high pairs (e.g., aces, kings), high-suited connectors (e.g., Ace-King, Ace-Queen), or strong Ace-X hands (e.g., Ace-King, Ace-Queen). So don’t be afraid to fold if the cards don’t fall your way, as overplaying weak hands may make you lose your chips much faster than losing your initial bet.

2. Position

Players in later positions (e.g., the button or the cut-off) have an advantage over players in earlier positions because they get to act later in the hand. This allows them to see what other players do before making their own decision, which can help them make better decisions.

3. Bluffing

This strategy can be a powerful tool in Texas Hold'em, but it should be used sparingly and strategically. Bluffing involves making a bet or raise with a weak hand to make it seem like you have a strong hand to get other players to fold. Good players will use their opponent's tendencies and past actions to determine whether or not they are likely to fold.

4. Pot odds

The pot odds are the ratio of the size of the pot to the size of the bet that you need to call. If the pot odds are favorable, it can be profitable to make a call even if your hand is not very strong. For example, if the pot is $100 and your opponent bets $20, you would be getting pot odds of 5:1 to make the call.

To determine whether the pot odds are favorable, you can compare them to your chances of winning the hand. This involves calculating your "hand odds," which refers to the probability of making your hand on the next card. For example, if you have a flush draw with one card to come, your hand odds are approximately 4:1 against making your flush (meaning you will make your flush once every five times on average).

So when you’re thinking about making a bet, you can compare your hand odds to the pot odds. If your hand odds are better than the pot odds, making the call may lead to a win. If your hand odds are worse than the pot odds, it has a worse chance of leading to a win.

There’s a good amount of overlap between these strategies and those you’ll use in Omaha, but because you’re drawing more cards, there are more ways to play.

Omaha Poker Strategy

It may seem at first blush that having four cards in your hand and only three community cards leaves a lot more room for error. And sometimes, that can be true. But there are some ways that this arrangement can hurt you if you’re not careful. These strategies may help you compete with the upper hand.

1. Starting hand selection

Your initial hand is crucial in Omaha. Because you start with four hole cards, there are more potential hand combinations to consider. Experienced players tend to play tight and only play strong starting hands, such as high pairs, high-suited connectors, or strong Ace-X hands with multiple suits.

2. Drawing to the nuts

Though this strategy has an odd name, many Solana Poker players don’t play an Omaha poker game without using it. The term “the nuts” refers to the best possible hand you can make from your own hole cards and the community cards available.

Drawing to the nuts means considering the potential strength of your hand and the likelihood that your hand will be made by the community cards. Some draws might look attractive at first glance, but if they don’t look like they’ll lead to the nuts, then they might not be worth pursuing.

One way to draw to the nuts is to look for hands that have multiple outs to the nuts. For example, if you have a wrap draw (a hand with four cards in sequence that can make a straight with two or more different cards), you might have many possible cards that could complete your straight, giving you more opportunities to make the nut straight.

Another important consideration when drawing to the nuts is the strength of your opponents' hands. If you are drawing to a low straight or flush, for example, but there are multiple cards of that suit or rank on the board, your opponents may also be drawing to the same hand, which reduces your chances of making the nuts. In these situations, it might be better to focus on drawing to a different hand that is less likely to be shared by your opponents.

By focusing on hands that have multiple outs to the nuts and avoiding draws that are unlikely to lead to the best possible hand, you can increase your chances of winning in Omaha.

3. Hand reading

We touched on hand reading a bit in the previous entry, but it’s basically looking at how your opponents are playing and the community cards that are available. By looking at these signs, you should be able to get an idea of the types of hands that your fellow players are holding. This method isn’t foolproof, but once you get enough experience it can be a way to improve your odds.

4. Avoid low hands in specific Omaha variants

In some variations of Omaha, there is a low hand component (known as Omaha Hi-Lo or Omaha 8-or-Better), which means the pot can be split between the high and low hands. In these games, it's important to avoid weak low hands, such as hands with no pairs and all low cards, because they are unlikely to win.

In these situations, you have a few options. Consider the community cards to see what hands may be out there. If the board has three cards that are eight or lower, then it’s possible someone has a low hand. If the board has four cards that are eight or lower, it’s more likely that someone has a strong hand.

You should also avoid hands with weak low potential. If you have a hand with three or four low cards and no pairs, you have a good chance of winning. There are other hands that may lead to a win, but don’t try to chase a win that’s not there.

Again, hand reading is important in these games. Make sure to watch your opponents’ betting patterns to see if they’re playing for the high hand, low hand, or both. If you notice that a player is betting aggressively for the low hand, you should be careful if you decide to continue in that hand.
