Overview of single-deck blackjack

Blackjack is a popular card game that has several variants for all types of players. If you are a seasoned blackjack player, you will enjoy games like Blackjack Switch, as that game allows you to play with two hands simultaneously. However, if you are starting off with blackjack, then the simplest variant of the game is single-deck blackjack.

Single-deck blackjack is played with one shoe of 52 cards, meaning that this variant has a lower house edge and better probability of getting blackjack. The gameplay for single-deck blackjack is similar to double-deck blackjack, and the objective is to get the best hand of 21. If you have a hand above 21, you bust and lose that round.

Below is a table of how single-deck blackjack cards are ranked:

Single-deck blackjack cards Card rankings
Numbered cards 2 - 9 These cards are ranked the same as their numbered value. For example a nine is a nine and a three is a three.
Ten, Jack, Queen and King These cards are face cards and all are worth 10.
Ace The ace can either be a 1 or 11, depending on which is better for the player’s hand.

How to play single-deck blackjack: A step-by-step guide

If you know how to play double-deck blackjack, then you will understand the gameplay for single-deck blackjack quickly. However, if you are unfamiliar with any blackjack variants, don’t worry, as I will explain the gameplay of single-deck blackjack. As shared, the objective of blackjack is to get the best hand of 21. If you have a hand above 21, you bust and lose the game.

When you play single-deck blackjack online, you are generally playing against the dealer. The dealer will deal two cards to the player (both face up) and two cards to the dealer (one face up and one face down). The player always plays first and must decide whether to hit (take additional cards), stand (don’t take any more cards), double down (double your play amount and get one more card) or split (if you get two of the same ranked cards you can split your hand into two separate hands).

Once the player has completed their turn, the dealer will play. If the player busts during their turn, the player automatically loses the game. When playing single-deck blackjack, the dealer generally hits with a soft hand (a hand that has an ace) of 17.

Below is an example of how a standard game of single-deck blackjack is played:

  • Step 1 - Enter your play amount: The player must enter their play amount for the game, and only once this is done will the dealer deal the cards.
  • Step 2 - The player makes a decision: The dealer will deal two face up cards to the player and two cards to the dealer (one face up and one face down). The player plays first; for example, if the player has a Jack and an eight (10 + 8 = 18), they can decide whether to hit or stand. Generally, the player will stand with an 18.
  • Step 3 - The dealer completes the game: Since the player stands on 18, the dealer needs a score between 19 and 21 to win. For example, the dealer face up card is a King, and then the face down card is flipped and shows a five (10 + 5 = 15). The dealer will have 15 and must hit again, and let’s say the next card is a Jack, the dealer will bust with a score of (10 + 5 + 10 = 25). The player will win the hand and get double their play amount (1:1 win ratio).

Single-deck blackjack rules

As you can see, single-deck blackjack is a simple game to play. If you do decide to play the game, then please note the following rules:

  • A soft hand is referred to as a hand that has an ace.
  • The dealer will generally always hit with a soft hand of 17.
  • The player can split a hand at most three times.
  • If splitting aces, you will only get one additional card.
  • A split ace and ten does not count as blackjack.
  • Depending on where you play, when you get blackjack (an ace with a 10, Jack, Queen or King), the win ratio is 3:2. For all other hand wins the win ratio is 1:1.
  • If the player and dealer have the same hand value, it will be a tie, and your play amount will be returned to you.

Single-deck blackjack basic strategies to follow

You should always maximize your gameplay by following a strategy when playing single-deck blackjack. To give you a helping hand with your gameplay, you can use the following single-deck blackjack strategies:

Splitting:

  • Always split aces.
  • Never split tens.
  • Always split 8s.
  • If the dealer has a weak card (2-7), you should split your hand if you have 2-7.
  • Never split 5s, treat them as a ten if the dealer has 2-9.

Soft hands (A hand with an ace):

  • If you have an ace and nine (soft 20), you should always stand.
  • If you have an ace and eight (soft 19), double if the dealer has a 6, otherwise stand.
  • If you have an ace and seven (soft 18), double if the dealer has a 2-6, hit if the dealer has a 9, 10 or ace, otherwise stand.
  • If you have an ace and a six or lower, double if the dealer has a 4-6, otherwise you should hit.

Hard hands (A hand without an ace):

  • 17 or more, you should always stand.
  • 12-16, stand if the dealer shows 2-6, otherwise hit.
  • When you have an 11, you should always double.
  • When you have a 10, you should double if the dealer shows 2-9, otherwise hit.
  • If you have an 8 or 9, double if the dealer shows 2-6, otherwise hit.
  • If you have anything less than a 7, always hit.
