Blackjack is easily my favorite online casino game to play - it’s fast paced, there’s room for strategy, and there’s both single player and live variants. Perhaps my top variant of this exciting card game though, is European blackjack.

This version of the game has various differences in terms of gameplay and rules compared to the popular American version, and both enjoy widespread exposure at sweepstakes casinos. Below, I will give you a complete breakdown of this card game, how it works, and provide some recommendations of where you can play it.

An introduction to European blackjack

European blackjack is one of the most popular card games at sweepstakes casinos and it’s been played in physical casinos for decades. It uses the basic premise of blackjack, where you have to try and build a hand of cards with a value as close to 21 as possible without going over, while also beating the dealer’s hand. But, there’s some variations to the rules that make it different compared to American blackjack, and other games like Blackjack Switch. Below, I explain the premise, the rules differences, and the main pros and cons of this game.

The basic premise

In the game of blackjack you are playing against the dealer. Your aim is to build a hand of cards with a value as close to 21 as possible. If your hand beats the dealers, you win. If your hand equals the dealers (unless the dealer has a natural blackjack and you have 21 from 3+ cards), the hand is a push, and you get your initial stake back. If your hand goes over 21, you automatically “bust” and lose the round, regardless of what the dealer does.

How European blackjack rules differ from American

The basic flow of a European blackjack game is the same as American, but there are rules differences that you need to be aware of:

  • The dealer gets only one face-up card initially.
  • The dealer doesn’t “peek” for blackjack until after players have played their hand.
  • You can only double down on hands with a total of 9, 10, or 11.
  • Fewer decks are typically used.
  • You can only split your cards once.

For some people, the limitations to splitting your cards are quite severe, as in the American version of the game you can split your hand up to three times. I do like the fact that the dealer only gets one face-up card initially though as this does alter the flow slightly and result in the marginally higher RTP of 99.60%. It means that you can potentially get better cards that otherwise in the American version the dealer would have snapped up as their second face-up card.

Pros and cons of European Blackjack

So that you have a clear idea of how this game compares to the other variations like blackjack double down madness, I’ve compiled a simple list of what I think are its main pros and cons below:

Pros and Cons
Pros and Cons
  • Slightly higher RTP than American blackjack
  • Fast-paced gameplay
  • Simple gameplay with less options
  • Fewer decks used (usually 2-3)
  • Later peek for blackjack
  • You can only split your hand once

How to play European blackjack online for free

European blackjack is featured extensively at real money online casinos but my favorite place to play this game is at sweepstakes casinos. At these sites, instead of using real money, you play with virtual currencies which are often called Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins. As a result, you can enjoy blackjack and other casino-style games for free!

These operators have excellent state availability too, and whereas real money online casinos are currently limited to 6 states only, it’s not uncommon for US social casinos to be available in 30+ states. When you sign up to most of these sites, you get a welcome bonus that gives you a chunk of virtual currencies to play with, and it’s a part of the regulatory compliance that they have to make the games always free to play.

I’ve explained the two main types of virtual currencies you can find at these sites here:

🪙 Gold Coins

This is the fun virtual currency and the only thing you can do with it is play games. When you play using your Gold Coins, you can potentially get GC prizes in return. You can’t redeem GC for cash prizes, and GC can’t be exchanged for SC.

💰 Sweeps Coins

This is usually considered the premium virtual currency as it has the chance to be redeemed for cash prizes. There is usually a minimum SC balance requirement, and you typically have to play with your bonus SC a set number of times before you can make a redemption request. The sweepstakes casinos will normally have an SC game mode which allows you to play European blackjack and other games using your SC balance, and gives you the chance to get SC prizes.

Four amazing sites that offer free European blackjack

I want you to be able to play European redeal gold blackjack and other variants of this awesome game, and to help, I’ve recommended four sweepstakes casinos that feature this table game, plus other classics.

Sweepstakes Casino Welcome Bonus
Real Prize 100,000 Gold Coins and 2 Sweeps Coins
Stake.us 560,000 Gold Coins, 56 Stake Cash, and a 5% rakeback
McLuck 7,500 Gold Coins and 2.5 Sweeps Coins
Sidepot.us 10,000 Gold Coins and 5 Sweeps Coins

European blackjack FAQs

🎲 What is the average RTP of European blackjack?

This depends on the exact rules of the game including how many decks are used and the blackjack prize. However, the average is considered to be 99.60% which is a little higher than American blackjack at 99.50%.

🤔 Is European blackjack better than American blackjack?

This depends on your preferences. Many people prefer American blackjack as it allows for splitting your hand up to three times, and you can double down on many more options. European blackjack does have a slightly higher overall RTP though.

💰 Can you win real money playing European blackjack at sweepstakes casinos?

Not directly from the gameplay. This is because you play the game using virtual currencies like Sweeps Coins and Gold Coins. You do have the potential to redeem your Sweeps Coins for cash prizes though. You usually need to have a minimum SC amount, and meet playthrough requirements for any bonus SC you have.

♠️ What is European redeal gold blackjack?

This is a specific variant of blackjack created by the iconic iGaming developer Microgaming. It has a redeal option where you can potentially swap your first 2 cards, or your dealer’s face up card for a set amount.
