There’s a fairly brief backstory to the game that talks about an out-of-control US president using social media (sound familiar?) to get into a war with Russia. From here, things spiral out of control and what you are left with is a bunch of generals forming alliances or blasting each other into oblivion.
All of this means that your goal is to be the last surviving military base out of all of the other players. This means having to secure your independence on a territory that is safe, as well as being rich in natural resources.
What we liked about Army Wars
There are plenty of other great real-time military strategy games out there, but we think that Army Wars is worth your time due to the following reasons:
Army Wars is huge. There are over 400 massive maps in the game that reportedly would take up 79x122 of your computer screens all at once. Don’t worry though, because each of these maps can be reached from the main map and navigation is made easy.
One thing that sets Army Wars above its predecessors is the fact that you aren’t just playing against a handful of other gamers. Instead, the main map will be packed full of anywhere up to 300 players who’ll all be putting their strategic skills against yours. Not only will you get to blast the other players into smithereens, but there’s also the capacity for diplomacy meaning that forming alliances could be key to your overall success.
You’ll have lots of fun building your fleet of war machines to help you claim territory. There’s a vast range of helicopters that are great for capturing strategic markers, while you’ll find over 15 different tanks that can make light work of your opposition. There’s also a decent range of fighter jets for air battles and quickly countering any sudden threats. Just don’t forget to create your own buildings to take command of your territory and strengthen your power and resources.
What we didn’t enjoy about Army Wars
Of course, there is no such thing as a perfect game, and this is definitely true of Army Wars. While it’s a great game, we felt that the backstory was a little limited and didn’t really affect the gameplay once you’d started.
Similarly, there is nothing very unique or imaginative about Army Wars. While other military strategy games take place in different eras, everything about Army Wars is kept in the here and now, although this could change in the future.

Don’t go blind into any encounter but instead make use of the wealth of statistics at your disposal. From here, you should analyse the Armor Strength of your unit that will indicate precisely how long you can hold out against your opponent’s attacks.
You’ll find that certain units are much more capable at specific tasks than others. Simply check the Specialization statistic to see if your unit is best at close-quarters combat, or whether it can do more damage from long-range. You can also check the Weapon Range statistic here to get a good idea of whether you can destroy your opponents from afar.
Don’t fall into the trap of specializing in one particular area of military conquest. After all, Army Wars boasts a massive range of vehicles that can all work wonders in the many different specific terrains. We’d recommend building your units with a good spread of different options ranging from light vehicles and heavy tanks through to anti-aircraft tanks, helicopters and airplanes. Remember that those anti-base units are key to claiming new sections of territory.

Even the best military commander will be at mercy of the weather conditions. We found ourselves frequently rendered pretty useless in Army Wars by the clouds of fog in certain territories. Thankfully, you can check the Visibility statistic for your unit to understand whether they are capable of making any further progress or whether it’s time to head back to your army base.
