The bridge of the Enterprise was shaped by drama as much as the fictional function it represented. Contained in this single re-created view of the bridge are nearly all the cast's regular places, as well as the doors to the turbolift where characters would make their entrances and exits. ![]() In the center of the bridge is Captain Kirk's (William Shatner) highly specialized command chair, which swivels to allow him a good view of all activity on the bridge. The console forward of the conn is where one usually found Navigator Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig) on the left and Helmsman Hikaru Sulu (George Takei) on the right. The large red light in the center of this console, as well as the light panel on the right side of the turbolift alcove, would blink when the ship was on "red alert", a state of heightened danger. With only minor adjustments, this one master shot could cover nearly any action the primary bridge crew took, and convey their relationship to one another. ![]() At the extreme left edge of this shot is the Library Computer station, where the ship's second in command and Science Officer, Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) kept a learned eye on the ships sensors. Right of that is the Communications station, where Lt. Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) would monitor all intraship communications, and facilitate conversations between the Enterprise and other vessels. On the opposite side of the turbolift alcove is the Engineering station, where Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott (James Doohan) was found monitoring his beloved engines -- when he wasn't down tending to them himself. |
